Wade Flaherty (born January 11, 1968 in Terrace , British Columbia ) is a former Canadian ice hockey goalkeeper and current coach . In the National Hockey League he was active for the San Jose Sharks , New York Islanders , Florida Panthers and Nashville Predators .

Career

Flaherty played for five years initially from 1984 to 1989 at various teams in the Western Hockey League , mainly with the Victoria Cougars . After a good 1987/88 season, which earned him a nomination for the West Second All-Star Team of the WHL, he was selected in the NHL Entry Draft in 1988 in the ninth round at 181st place by the Buffalo Sabers .

For the 1989/90 season, the Canadian moved to the professional camp and stood at the Greensboro Monarchs in the East Coast Hockey League in goal, which he led to winning the Riley Cup at the end of the season and was voted the most valuable player in the playoffs. The following season Flaherty played in the International Hockey League with the Kansas City Blades , which were from the 1991/92 season the farm team of the newly formed San Jose Sharks and took the goalkeeper under contract. Between 1991 and 1997 Flaherty came repeatedly to appearances in the National Hockey League , but his greatest achievement was winning the Turner Cup and the James Norris Memorial Trophy of the IHL. After his contract with the Sharks ran out after the 1996/97 season , he moved to the New York Islanders as a free agent , where he did not get beyond being a second or third goalkeeper until the summer of 2001. This was followed by further changes to the Tampa Bay Lightning , Florida Panthers and Nashville Predators , with whose farm team he won the Calder Cup in the 2003/04 season . Flaherty also received the Jack A. Butterfield Trophy . After his contract with the organization of the Predators had expired, he switched to the organization of the Vancouver Canucks , but was only used there with the Manitoba Moose in the AHL. In the 2007/08 season , Flaherty was with the Rockford IceHogs , the Chicago Blackhawks ' farm team , under contract.

After his one-year contract at Rockford expired, Flaherty accepted an offer from his former employer, the San Jose Sharks, before the start of the 2008-09 season. They signed Flaherty as a regular goalkeeper for their farm team, the China Sharks in the Asia League Ice Hockey , where the same also worked as a goalkeeper coach. In January 2009, Flaherty accepted an offer from the Chicago Blackhawks who hired him as a goalkeeping coach. On July 15, 2011, he was hired by the Winnipeg Jets as a goalkeeping coach.
