The NHL Entry Draft 1988 took place on June 11, 1988 in the Forum de Montréal in Montréal in the Canadian province of Québec . In the 26th edition of the NHL Entry Draft , the teams of the National Hockey League (NHL) selected a total of 252 players in twelve rounds. The US center Mike Modano was selected by the Minnesota North Stars as the first overall draft pick . Trevor Linden for the Vancouver Canucks and Curtis Leschyshyn for the Nordiques de Québec followed in second and third . The order of the draft resulted from the reversed final table of the past season 1987/88 , with the playoff teams after the teams that had missed the playoffs.
In retrospect, the Entry Draft 1988 is rated as one of the strongest vintages in NHL history. With Mike Modano, Teemu Selänne , Mark Recchi and Rob Blake , he has so far produced four Hall of Fame members, while Modano, Selänne and Recchi also Jeremy Roenick , Rod Brind'Amour and Alexander Mogilny reached the milestone of 1000 scorer points . Other well-known players include Martin Gélinas , Tie Domi , Tony Amonte , Joé Juneau , Dmytro Chrystytsch , Valeri Kamenski , Marty McInnis , Bret Hedican and Alexei Gussarow .
