Chris Govedaris (born February 2, 1970 in Toronto , Ontario ) is a former Canadian - Greek ice hockey player who played for the Hartford Whalers and the Toronto Maple Leafs in the National Hockey League from 1986 to 2002 .

Career

Govedaris began his career in 1986 in the Canadian Junior League Ontario Hockey League with the Toronto Marlboros . The then 16-year-old was able to improve steadily there and was one of the best scorers in the team in his first year. In the 1986/87 season he was able to achieve 64 scorer points in 64 games. Even back then, the sturdy striker played ice hockey with a focus on his body and received 148 penalty minutes. After another extremely successful season in Toronto, the NHL scouts noticed him. During the NHL Entry Draft in 1988 it was the Hartford Whalers who selected him in the first round in eleventh position.

He then played another season with the Marlboros before signing a contract with the Hartford Whalers in 1990. Those in charge of the Whalers used the 1.85 m tall and 98 kg heavy left-handed shooter in the following years mainly in the American Hockey League with the Springfield Indians , the farm team at that time . Despite good performance, he could not prevail in the NHL. In the four years that he was under contract with the Whalers, he came only to 33 NHL missions and scored six points scorer.

In the summer of 1993, he moved to the Toronto Maple Leafs as a free agent within the NHL. Here, too, he played almost exclusively in the AHL with the St. John's Maple Leafs . After only one year he left the club again and joined the Detroit Red Wings , who only used him in their farm team, the Adirondack Red Wings .

After he finally figured out hardly any chances of a permanent engagement in the NHL, he decided in 1996 to switch to the German Ice Hockey League to the Eisbären Berlin . Here he immediately belonged to the regular team and was one of the top performers in the team. The native Canadian with Greek roots was able to celebrate great success with the polar bears. In addition to the successes in the DEL, he reached third place in the European Hockey League 1998/99 , as well as twice second place in the IIHF Continental Cup in 1997 and 1999 . After five seasons he left the club in 2001 and joined the Swedish second division team Leksands IF , with whom he immediately achieved promotion to the Elitserien . He then ended his career at the age of 32.

International

For the Canadian national team , Govedaris took part in the 1995 World Cup in Sweden and won the bronze medal with his team. In total, he was used in eight games and scored one goal. In addition, it had a plus / minus statistic of +1.
