The IIHF Continental Cup in 1999 was the third staging of the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF discharged competition . 49 teams took part in the tournament, which was held from September 24th to December 28th, 1999. The final round was held from December 26th to 28th, 1999 in the German capital Berlin .

One final round participant was set, the host Eisbären Berlin . The other three finalists were determined in three qualifying rounds.

First round

Group A

The Group A games were played in the Bulgarian capital Sofia . The venue was the 4600-seat Winter Sports Palace, which is the home of HK Levski Sofia . The tournament was won by SC Miercurea Ciuc from Romania , who prevailed with three clear wins and reached the second qualifying round.

Group B

The tournament Group B was in Polish Nowy Targ discharged. Miejska Hala Lodowa , which is home to Podhale Nowy Targ and has a capacity of 3,314 , served as the venue . The tournament was won by the host club Podhale Nowy Targ, who prevailed with three clear wins and a goal difference of 26-2 and reached the second qualifying round.

Group C

The group C tournament was held in the Romanian capital Bucharest . The venue for the tournament was the Mihai Flamaropol Arena , which can seat up to 8,000 spectators and is the home of the host Steaua Bucharest . In the course of the tournament, the host achieved three clear victories against the other participants and thus moved into the second qualifying round.

The group D games were played in Dunaújváros, Hungary, in Dunaújvárosi Jégcsarnok with a capacity of 3500 . The group winner was the host Dunaferr SE Dunaújváros with three wins in three games. With that, Dunaferr SE reached the second qualifying round.

The Slovenian representative, HDD Olimpija Ljubljana , only managed one win and two draws - he still achieved the same number of points as the hosts. Due to the direct comparison won, the HDD Olimpija Ljubljana prevailed and reached the next round.

The matches in Group L were in Welsh Cardiff discharged. The HK Lada Tolyatti prevailed with 4: 2 points and due to the better goal difference against the Nottingham Panthers and reached the third round. After the Russian club lost their first game 6: 8 against the Panthers, the team then won 12: 1 against Lyon HC and 8: 2 against the Cardiff Devils .

Third round

Groups

Group N games took place in Plzeň in the Czech Republic . The HKm Zvolen reached first place and qualified for the final round. Zvolen was able to beat both his league rivals HC Košice and the Polish club Dwory SSA Unia Oświęcim and only lost to host HC Keramika Plzeň .

The group O tournament was held in the two Swiss towns of Ambrì and Biasca in Ticino . The host HC Ambrì-Piotta , just like the Slovenian club HDD Olimpija Ljubljana , achieved two wins and one draw. Due to the direct comparison between the two teams, the host HCAP prevailed and reached the final of the competition.

This was the second time in its history that HC Ambrì-Piotta under coach Larry Huras won the IIHF Continental Cup due to the better goal difference, while the host Eisbären Berlin only took second place. In the game against HKm Zvolen, captain Marc Fortier was only able to equalize three minutes before the end of the game, while the Eisbären performed best in the last tournament game and beat Ak Bars Kazan 3-2.

The then goalkeeper of the Eisbären Berlin , Udo Döhler , was named the best keeper of the tournament by the IIHF. The best defender was the native Swede Leif Rohlin from HC Ambrì-Piotta , who scored two goals in the final round. Furthermore, Eduard Kudermetow was named the best striker by Russian representative Ak Bars Kazan . He had scored two goals in seven games and received six penalty minutes.
