The IIHF Continental Cup in 1998 was the second edition of the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF discharged competition . A total of 49 teams from 26 countries took part. The final round was held from December 27 to 29, 1998 in Košice , Slovakia .
One final round participant was set, the host and last year's winner HC Košice . The three other finalists were determined in three qualifying rounds.
First round
Group A
The matches of Group A took place between 18 and 20 September 1998 at the French Lyon instead. The Norwegian team from Asker prevailed.

Group O
Group O was held in Ambrì in the Swiss canton of Ticino . The host club, HC Ambrì-Piotta , dominated the tournament with three wins, making it into the final. The venue was the 7,000-seat Pista la Valascia . The big disappointment of the tournament was the Austrian representative EHC Graz , who only suffered defeats and went bankrupt that same year.

The Group P games were played in Yaroslavl , Russia . HK Awangard Omsk prevailed with three wins, while the host Torpedo Yaroslavl only achieved second place. In the decisive game for the tournament victory, the team from Omsk managed a 4-0 victory against the hosts and thus reached the final of the Continental Cup.

1 After the group matches, three teams had four points and one loss and one win each against the other two competitors. Therefore, the better goal difference in the games of these three teams decided against each other.
HC Ambrì-Piotta under coach Larry Huras won the IIHF Continental Cup for the first time in its history due to the better goal difference, while the Düsseldorfer EG could not win any game in the final round.
