Akademik Sofia ( Bulgarian Академик София ) was a sports club from Bulgaria's capital Sofia , which was dissolved in 2012 for financial reasons. The association was founded in 1947. The club's nickname is "The Students".
The team won the Balkan Cup in 1974 and played in the 1975/76 season in the UEFA Cup , where they reached the second round. The club even posted two players for the 1974 World Cup, namely Ivan Dimitrov and Mladen Vasilev . From 1982 to 2010, Akademik only played in the lower class, before returning to the Bulgarian elite class for one season after 28 years: On May 23, 2010, the relegation game of the second placed in the B groups against PFK Nessebar was won 2-1 and won for qualify the A Grupa. At the end of the 2010/11 season, however, stood as table 15. the direct relegation. In 2012 the association was dissolved for financial reasons.

Numerous other sports are offered under the auspices of Akademik. In badminton, the club was Bulgarian team champion eight times from 1997 to 2009.
The club's ice hockey department was founded in 1949 and took part in the game operations until 1993, before it was merged with the HK CSKA Sofia ice hockey club . In 1995 the ice hockey section was re-established and in 1998 merged with parts of HK Metalurg Pernik to form Akademik-Metalurg Sofia . The team has been the Akademika Sofia since 2001 and won the state championship and the national cup competition in 2006 and 2007 . The club's venue has always been the Sofia Winter Sports Palace .
