The Lukoil Academic ( Bulgarian Лукойл Академик ; English Lukoil Academic ) is a professional Bulgarian basketball club in Sofia . The first men's team is a 26-time Bulgarian champion and a regular participant in various European club competitions.

history

The basketball department of the "Akademik" student club from Sofia was founded in 1947. Ten years later, the club became Bulgarian champions for the first time. In the 1957/58 season, Akademik took part in the first European Cup. The team made it to the final of the tournament. This success was repeated in 1959. However, both finals were lost to the long-term winner at the time, ASK Riga . In the following years, Akademik could not show any great successes internationally. National championships and cups have been won over and over again. After the entry of the Russian oil company Lukoil , the sponsor name was added to the club name in 2000. Since joining, the national dominance increased and led to 10 championships in a row. Thus Akademik has risen to the Bulgarian record champions. In the new millennium, Akademik regularly takes part in the ULEB Eurocup and the EuroChallenge .
