Nawapolazk or Novopolotsk ( belarusian Наваполацк , Russian Новополоцк / Novopolotsk ) is an administratively independent satellite town in the immediate vicinity of the smaller city Polazk (belarusian Полацк ) in the north of Belarus. The two cities are separated by the Daugava River , which flows through neighboring Latvia to Riga and there flows into the Baltic Sea. Navapolatsk is located in Vitebskaya Woblasz and has about 100,000 inhabitants.
history
When new factories were built, care was taken to ensure that they were far enough away from the city of Polatsk so that the city would remain free of exhaust fumes. It was later decided to allow some residential buildings in the vicinity of the industrial facilities. In addition to the new workers' settlement, a fire station , a hospital and a school were built. Over the years, the new city, called Navapolazk , grew rapidly and, in terms of population, overtook the neighboring city of Polatsk, despite its proximity to many industrial plants classified as dangerous. The petrochemical industry in particular occupies an important place in the local employer structure. The best-known companies from Nawapolatsk nationwide include the refiner Naftan , which is part of the state-owned Belneftekhim group, and the chemical company Polymir , which in turn belongs to Naftan.
traffic
Navapolatsk is connected to the neighboring city of Polatsk by a tram and several streets; Polatsk is connected to the national road and rail network.
