Skadowsk ( Ukrainian Скадовськ ; Russian Скадовск ) is a port city and a tourist center in the south of the southern Ukrainian Oblast of Kherson, 100 km south of the Oblast center of Kherson . The city is located on the shores of the Black Sea on Jarylhach Bay opposite the island of Jarylhach . It is the administrative seat of the Rajons of the same name .
history
The area of today's city was already settled in the Bronze Age, which is still evident today from relics of the spa culture. In addition, traces of Scythians and Sarmatians have been discovered during archaeological excavations . In the Middle Ages the area for a long time under the rule of the was the Ottoman Empire belonging Krimkhanats . At that time there was a Tatar fishing settlement called Ali-Agok ( Ukrainian , Russian : Алі-Агок ) near what is now the city .
In 1894 today's place was founded, named after the German-born nobleman Sergiy Baltasarowitsch Skadowskiy, to whom this area belonged. At first the place was called Skadowskiy, in 1895 the city got its current name (until 1933 even longer Скадовське / Skadowske). The most important development factor at that time was the port, from where grain, wool and lamb were shipped, especially to Western Europe . In 1899 there were already around 2,000 inhabitants in the city. Even then, spa tourism was also of some importance. In the first half of the 20th century, the population suffered heavy losses in the course of the Russian Civil War and World War II . The spa facilities were expanded during the Soviet era.

The city coat of arms was designed in 1994. With the symbols of anchor, ear of corn, irrigation canal and parasol, it refers to the city's central economic areas: the port, agriculture and spa tourism.
Economy and Transport
The port and the food industry are of particular economic importance. From the port there are u. a. regular ferry connections to Batumi ( Georgia ), Thessaloniki ( Greece ) and Samsun ( Turkey ). The nearest railway station is in Kalantschak, 52 km away .
