Henichesk ( Ukrainian Генічеськ ; Russian Геническ Genitschesk ) is a city in the southern Ukrainian Oblast of Kherson on the Sea of Azov with about 20,000 inhabitants.
It is located at the northern end of the Tauride Strait about 180 kilometers east-southeast of the oblast capital Kherson . In the south of the city, the Henichesk Strait separates the city from the Arabat Spit .
Henitschesk was founded in 1784 and was called "Genitsch" (Russian Генич ) or Henitsch (Ukrainian Геніч ) until 1837, the year in which it was raised to town . The inhabitants were mainly concerned with extracting salt from the many lakes in the area, and the place also functioned as a port. With the construction of a branch line of the Sevastopol – Losowa railway , it got a connection to the rail network in 1876.
The city is the birthplace of the artist Jossyp Abromowytsch Dajz (1897-1954) and the astronomer Tamara Mikhailovna Smirnowa (1935-2001). The asteroid (2093) Genichesk was named after the city.
