The Arabat Spit ( Ukrainian Арабатська стрілка / Arabatska strilka ; Russian Арабатская стрелка / Arabatskaja strelka ; Crimean Tatar Arabat beli ) is a 112 km long spit that separates the Sea of ​​Azov from the Sywash .

The spit lies between the city of Henichesk , Ukraine, in the north and the northeast coast of the Crimean peninsula in the south. It is separated from Henitschesk by the Henitschesk street . Another name is Thin Road (Ukrainian: Тонка Протока , Russian: Тонкий Пролив ), which refers to the geometry - it is about 4 km long, 80-150 m wide and 4.6 m deep.

The Arabat Spit is 112 km long and 270 m to 8 km wide; its area is 395 km², the average width is 3.5 km. The spit is low and straight on the Sea of ​​Azov side, while it is curved on the Sywash side. There are two 7–8 km wide areas of brown clay hills; these areas are 7.5 km and 32 km from Henichesk Street, respectively. Otherwise, the surface is formed from sand and shell debris washed up by the Sea of ​​Azov. The vegetation mostly consists of various grasses and herbs, blackthorn , fescue grasses , feather grasses , sea ​​kale , salt herbs , springs , Carex colchica , tamarisk , rose hips , liquorice and the like. a. Today the spit is a recreation area and the sea side is used as a beach. The waters are shallow and only reach a depth of 2 meters 100–200 meters from the coast. The water temperatures are around 0 ° C in winter, 10–15 ° C in spring and autumn and 25–30 ° C in summer; the air temperatures are about the same. About half of the spit belongs to the northern Cherson Oblast and the southern half, which borders the Arabat Bay , to the Autonomous Republic of Crimea .

In the north of the spit are the villages Henitscheska Hirka , Shchaslywzewe and Strilkowe as well as the settlement Pryoserne , in the south is the village Soljane .

Since the annexation of Crimea by Russia in 2014, the peninsula has been on the border between Ukraine and the Russian-controlled Crimea .
