Stephan Sulke (born December 27, 1943 in Shanghai ) is a Swiss songwriter , keyboardist , pianist and guitarist .

Life

Sulke, son of Berlin Jews , was born in China in the so-called Shanghai Ghetto because his parents had fled from the National Socialists . In 1949 the family wanted to return to Germany, but the father died and his mother married in Switzerland , so that Sulke mainly grew up there. Occasionally he came to live with his grandparents in Berlin and also in the USA .

In 1963 his first single Mon tourne-disque appeared in Paris under the pseudonym "Steff" , for which he received the Grand Prix du Premier Disque . This award was presented to him by the French actor and chanson singer Maurice Chevalier . In 1965 he published the single He, Little Blondie (Little Honda) in Germany , and another Where Did She Go in the USA , which was particularly successful in the southern states. That is why he published more singles in the USA, but also in France until 1967 . In 1967 he returned to Switzerland and studied law at the universities of Zurich and Bern without obtaining a degree. At the same time he published records in English and French under various pseudonyms .

In 1969 he built his own recording studio in Biel , where he made recordings for artists from the jazz and pop scene. In 1972 he founded an electronics company for studio technology in London , which was later relocated to Biel. In 1974 he published his first own songs in German under his real name. He soon became known in the whole of German-speaking countries and was also a guest on numerous television programs. His first television appearance in Germany was on October 23, 1976 in the live Saturday evening entertainment program Amlauf Band with Rudi Carrell , where he performed the song Lotte from his first and then current LP Stephan Sulke . In addition to his own songs, he also wrote texts for other artists such as Katja Ebstein or Erika Pluhar . Sulke's song I just loved you was covered in 1983 by Herbert Grönemeyer on his LP Mixed feelings .

In 1981 his best-known song Uschi appeared on the Stephan Sulke 6 record . In July 1982 he reached number 3 on the ZDF hit parade . Later other titles appeared, but they could no longer build on Uschi's success . In 1982 he also made a name for himself as a book author. His work was called biscuits , followed by love there in the cinema (1984).

1989 Sulke moved, for the time being after his last published CD all Have I still like to , first of all from the industry back. From 1991 he worked with the architect Kurt Feldweg in Berlin on various construction projects.

In the spring of 1994, Sulke reported to the police in Frankfurt (Oder) at the Polish border with severe head injuries ; he claimed to have been kidnapped and beaten. Since his 500 Mercedes was later found burnt out, the police speculated on the so-called auto mafia as the perpetrator. After that, Sulke temporarily withdrew from the public.

In 1999 he released a new CD (minor & major), and in 2000 he was back on stage and toured successfully through Germany and Switzerland. On this tour, the concert was recorded on March 17th, 2000 in the Alte Oper event hall in Frankfurt am Main and released in the same year with the double CD Live . Since his musical comeback in 1999, Sulke has been releasing albums at (un) regular intervals, in 2017 his new record Liebe ist nothing for beginners was released by the German music label Staatsakt , for him this was his first CD and LP production with this music publisher.

In 2001 Sulke hit the headlines because he had signed a contract with the MDR in his real estate business . In 1992, a housing project was agreed with the then head of the MDR, Udo Reiter , because after the reunification, the housing shortage was also noticeable for MDR employees, but the bottom line was that the MDR lost several million euros by 2005. In 2002 Sulke also appeared as a painter and sculptor . His exhibition Pictures and Sculptures by Stephan Sulke was on view in Frankfurt am Main . In 2005 Sulke wrote the music, Christian Berg the lyrics, for the children's musical Heidi ... a mountain musical .

In 2017 his album Love is not for beginners was released .

Sulke completed another concert tour in 2018 and 2019.

He lives with his Italian partner in the south of France .
