Herbert Grönemeyer (2014)

Herbert Arthur Wiglev Clamor Grönemeyer (born April 12, 1956 in Göttingen ) is a German musician , record producer , singer , composer , lyricist and actor . He was first known to a wide audience through his appearance in the movie Das Boot , before he was perceived as a musician. Since 1984, all of his German-language studio albums have been number one in the German album charts . His most successful album to date, Mensch (2002), sold 3.7 million times, including 3.15 million in Germany, making it the best-selling German album since 1975. With over 17 million records sold domestically, it is the most commercially successful contemporary album Musicians of Germany ; his striking way of singing and a marcato- like gesture when singing are his trademarks.

Life

Childhood and Adolescence (1956–1973)

When Herbert Grönemeyer was born, his parents lived in Clausthal-Zellerfeld . Grönemeyer's mother was the nurse Hella Carin, born from Hunnius, a descendant of the physician Carl Abraham Hunnius , who came from a German Baltic doctor family, and his father was the mining engineer Wilhelm Grönemeyer (1916-2003) from Westphalia . Since his mother had to consult a specialist for the birth, he was not born in Clausthal-Zellerfeld, but in Göttingen. He was the youngest child in the family, one of his brothers is the physician Dietrich Grönemeyer . When he was about a year old, his parents moved with him from Clausthal-Zellerfeld to Bochum , where he grew up. Thanks to his family on his mother's side, he came into contact with music and, like his brothers before, received piano lessons at the age of eight. In retrospect, he describes his upbringing as follows: "I think I grew up between love, artistic affection and a lot of severity." He was confirmed at the age of 14. In Bochum he attended the humanistic grammar school on the Ostring and was involved in the school choir, among other things. At school he also met the later actor Claude-Oliver Rudolph . Together with Rudolph, Grönemeyer earned his first living as a pianist at the Schauspielhaus Bochum , while his friend worked as an actor. A band from Wattenscheid was also important to him, and he invested a lot of time in rehearsals.

Artistic beginnings (1974–1983)

As the singer of the Bo-Band at the Bochumer Schauspielhaus, Grönemeyer first came into contact with theater life as an actor. He later worked there as a répétiteur and made his first compositions in 1974. He owes his discovery as an actor to Joachim Preen , who first brought him onto the stage for the play John, George, Paul, Ringo and Bert by William Martin Russell .

After graduating from high school in 1975, he began studying music and law at the Ruhr University in Bochum, but dropped out after five semesters.

In 1976 Grönemeyer became musical director at the Schauspielhaus Bochum and played other theater roles there, such as Till Eulenspiegel, Prince Orlofsky in Johann Strauss ' Die Fledermaus and Melchior in Frank Wedekind's Spring Awakening . Here he also worked with Peter Zadek and the choreographer Pina Bausch .

Although Grönemeyer never attended drama school, he played in a few television films. The acting career was promoted in 1977 with a role in the film The Hostage . Herbert Grönemeyer met actress Anna Henkel in 1978 while filming Jürgen Flimm's TV film Uns That Is Enough , who later became his wife. The next year his first record with Dieter Flimm's jazz rock group "Ocean Orchestra" (partly the music for this film) was released with Grönemeyer as the lead singer.

In 1979 he worked as an actor in the television film Home Among Strangers for ARD . In the same year he worked for a few months as musical director at the Württemberg State Theater in Stuttgart under drama director Claus Peymann . At the Schauspielhaus Köln he was Lorenzo in The Merchant of Venice . His solo debut album Grönemeyer received the "Golden Lemon" for the ugliest cover of the year. His second album Zwo from 1981 was not a commercial success either.

In Wolfgang Petersen's film Das Boot (based on the novel by Lothar-Günther Buchheim ), Grönemeyer appeared alongside actors such as Jürgen Prochnow , Klaus Wennemann , Martin Semmelrogge , Jan Fedder , Heinz Hoenig , Claude-Oliver Rudolph , Sky du Mont and Uwe Ochsenknecht as Lieutenant Werner.

For the German-German co-production of the Peter Schamoni film Spring Symphony , in which he played Robert Schumann - alongside Nastassja Kinski as Clara Wieck and Rolf Hoppe as Friedrich Wieck  - Grönemeyer lived in Leipzig for half a year in 1983. This film was the first West German production that could be shot on original locations in the GDR .

He focused increasingly on his music. For the next albums he only wrote the songs Anna and Musik when it is loud . His classic currywurst was also created during this time (see also Bratwursthaus ), but was penned by Diether Krebs , Jürgen Triebel and Horst-Herbert Krause . During a tour, numerous concerts were canceled due to lack of interest. The albums that were created in collaboration with Otto Draeger and Edo Zanki were so unsuccessful that Intercord Ton GmbH terminated the contract after the album Mixed Feelings, which was released in 1983 .

The breakthrough with Bochum and further successes (1984–1991)

Herbert Grönemeyer's concert in June 2009 in Bochum

After switching to EMI , the album 4630 Bochum , which was released on August 14, 1984, was a great success in the music business , especially after a concert recording for the WDR series Rockpalast on November 16, 1984. The album  (picture) , the title of which refers to the city's zip code at the time , stayed in the top 100 of the hit parade for 79 weeks and was the most successful album of the year in Germany in 1984. Above all, the single Men made the artist known throughout Germany . In addition, the title song Bochum became the city's unofficial anthem, which can now be heard - alongside the club anthem - in the home stadium shortly before every VfL Bochum game . And the ballad Flugzeug im Bauch also developed into a classic of German-language rock and pop music. In 1985 Grönemeyer played alongside Julie Christie , Burt Lancaster and Bruno Ganz in the Deutz film Fathers and Sons by the director Bernhard Sinkel .

With the album Sprünge in 1986 he took a political stance. The titles Dance and Smile are commentaries on the state of the nation. They attack the CDU - FDP government coalition and the then Federal Chancellor Helmut Kohl . This was underlined again two years later on the album Ö and the title Mit Gott on it.

At the Anti-WAAhnsinns Festival in Burglengenfeld , Upper Palatinate , Grönemeyer played for the first time in front of over 100,000 spectators.

In 1987 he took part in a solo appearance at the Aufru (h) r of the Ruhr area in the Rheinhausen steelworks with many well-known artists to demo for the maintenance of the steelworks and for the financial support of the workers, which earned him a lot of recognition and popularity among the population.

In the television film Sommer in Lesmona , based on the novel of the same name by Marga Berck , which was filmed under the direction of Peter Beauvais with Katja Riemann , Benedict Freitag and Richard Münch among others , he appeared as an actor and directed the 1988 with Adolf-Grimme Price awarded gold soundtrack at. Mainly the titles Halt mich, Vollmond and Was soll das? Contributed to the commercial success of the album Ö . at. At the same time, Grönemeyer's greatest hits were released in English on What's All This . The title song of the album hit the singles charts in Canada . A tour of Canada followed.

The album Bochum was also released in 1989 by the GDR record label AMIGA. This was preceded by negotiations about the title Now or Never and another title, which the government at the time did not want to publish.

After the fall of the Berlin Wall , he published the record Luxus . The concert on May 18, 1991 on a meadow in Ahrensfelde near Berlin as part of the tour was attended by around 100,000 people. This means that Grönemeyer still holds the audience record for a German musician today.

The English language version of the album Luxus was released in Canada in 1991; it also includes a French version by Marie .

New ways with chaos , everything stays different and human (1993-2005)

On January 20, 1993, Grönemeyer married his partner Anna Henkel , the mother of his two children.

In the same year the album Chaos was released . It reached number one on the German charts. The accompanying tour was visited by well over 600,000 people in the following months.

The music broadcaster MTV invited Grönemeyer as the first non-English speaking artist to appear on the TV show MTV Unplugged . The concert took place on May 15, 1994 in the Babelsberg studios .

In early 1998 he and his family moved to London , where he spent most of the year until 2007. It was there that he began working with his long-time producer Alex Silva . Grönemeyer maintained his own studio in Mayfair Studios , where he continued to produce in German.

On April 21, 1998, Grönemeyer published Bleibt alles anders . In addition to the classic rock band line-up, Grönemeyer increasingly found electronically generated sounds in his studio work. The album reached platinum in Germany after less than four weeks . Around 350,000 visitors experienced the first part of the tour.

With the death of his brother Wilhelm on November 1, 1998 and his wife Anna on November 5, 1998, Grönemeyer met two severe blows of fate. It took Grönemeyer over a year to be artistically active again. He later dedicated the song Der Weg on the album Mensch (2002) to his wife .

After the continuation of the Bleibt-alles-anders tour in 1999, Grönemeyer played two concerts at the EXPO in Hanover with the NDR Pops Orchestra under the direction of Nick Ingman, which later resulted in the double DVD Stand der Dinge . In the same year he played with the same arrangement in Berlin in front of the Brandenburg Gate and in the Goitzsche Landscape Park in Saxony-Anhalt .

The album Mensch was released in August 2002 . It went platinum even before it was released due to pre-orders. In the end, it received 21 gold medals and was number 1 in the German album charts for eleven weeks . The single Mensch was Grönemeyer's most successful song so far, with which he reached number one in the German single charts for the first time.

From 2002 Herbert Grönemeyer toured Germany as part of his Alles-Gute-von-yesterday-bis-Mensch tour. He also performed in the city of his youth, the city of Bochum , again and again, most recently with the album Mensch in the Ruhrstadion . The tour was supposed to end on July 8, 2003 in Montreux . Until then, 1.5 million viewers had seen the performances. The live DVD, released in 2003, was the first DVD ever to make it to number one in the German album charts.
