William Martin Russell

William "Willy" Martin Russell (born August 23, 1947 in Whiston near Liverpool ) is an English author , playwright , poet and composer .

Russell comes from a working class family . As a teenager he worked as an apprentice hairdresser and later ran his own salon. As an adult, he took theater lessons at an evening school and began writing himself.

His first success was a piece about the Beatles , followed by Educating Rita , a semi-autobiographical piece about a hairdresser who is aiming for a degree at the Open University , and the musical Blood Brothers , whose music he also composed.

Other pieces Russells are Breezeblock Park , Stags and Hens (deer and hens) , One for the Road and Shirley Valentine , which was made into a movie. For his screenplay for Rita wants to finally know , he received an Oscar nomination in the Best Adapted Screenplay category , as well as a nomination for the Golden Globe Award and the British Academy Film Award . The film is based on his play Educating Rita. His work on the screenplay for Shirley Valentine earned him an Evening Standard British Film Award . Most recently his novel The Fly Catcher appeared .
