The London Borough of Barking and Dagenham [ ˈbɑːkɪŋ ən ˈdægnəm ] is a borough of London . It is in the northeast of the city. When the Greater London Administrative Region was established in 1965, it emerged from the Municipal Borough of Barking and the Municipal Borough of Dagenham in Essex . The borough was initially called the London Borough of Barking and was given its current name in 1980.
In 2008, the population was made up of 75.1% white, 8.3% Asian, 11.9% black and 1.1% Chinese.
Barking and Dagenham has twinning partnerships with the German city of Witten and the Polish city of Tczew . A Ford plant has been located in Dagenham since 1931 .
