Wayne Elliot Mardle (born May 10, 1973 in Dagenham , London , England ) is a former darts player for the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC), until 2002 he played for the British Darts Organization (BDO).

Career

Mardle began playing darts at the age of 11 when he started practicing with his father. His first throw with 180 points - the maximum number of points that can be achieved with three darts - came just two weeks after he had started playing. He quickly got better than his father and won his first tournament in 1986 on his 13th birthday in a pub called Double Top.

Since 2000 he has been known by the nickname "Hawaii 501": on the one hand, because he has appeared on stage in Hawaiian shirts since 1998, on the other hand, 501 is the starting point for a leg in darts. The name is also a reference to the US television series Hawaii Five-Zero . Due to his casual appearance and behavior on stage (for example dancing to the break music) he became a crowd favorite.

Even if he had meanwhile reached the 5th place in the world rankings, he could not claim a tournament victory in one of the major competitions ("PDC Majors") - although he was able to win the finals in the Las Vegas Desert Classic in 2004 and 2005 reach, but lost both games to Phil Taylor . At the PDC World Championship 2006 Mardle reached the semi-finals, but there was also defeated in a close game to Phil Taylor with 5: 6 in sets.

On December 29, 2007 he succeeded in the quarterfinals of the World Darts Championship, the 2008 Darts World Championship organized by the Professional Darts Corporation, as the first player to prematurely throw the record world champion Phil Taylor out of the tournament. Up until then, Taylor had always made it to the finals. Mardle lost 4-6 in sets in the semifinals the following day against qualifier Kirk Shepherd .

Wayne Mardle has been married to his wife Donna since July 2, 2002, who also practices darts - but only on a semi-professional level.

Mardle says of himself that if he hadn't become a professional dart player, he'd be a television presenter. He justifies this statement with the fact that he can talk nonsense like all television presenters (English: "I can talk crap like them all").

Lately Wayne Mardle has been in Germany more often and takes part in so-called exhibitions, show dart games in which he presents various darts tricks to the audience.

In 2012 he ended his tournament career.

Since the end of his active career, he has accompanied the major TV tournaments such as the World Darts Championship for Sky Sports as an expert.

On January 7, 2017, he competed as one of eight professionals at the Celebrity Darts World Cup 2017 on Pro7 . His team partner was the sports presenter Laura Wontorra .
