World championships in darts have been held since 1978 and are organized by the British Darts Organization (BDO). The BDO World Championship was formerly called simply The Embassy after the sponsor , today it is officially called The Lakeside World Professional Darts Championship. It takes place every year at the Lakeside Country Club in Frimley Green , near London . Since 2001 there has also been a competition for women at BDO and a youth competition since 2015.
In 1992, under the influence of Sky Television, the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) split off from the BDO, which has been holding a world championship competing with the BDO since 1994. The PDC World Championship takes place annually at Christmas / New Year. For many years the venue was the Circus Tavern in Purfleet , Essex . In order to do justice to the growing interest of the audience, the PDC World Championship has been held in a new location since November 2007: In Alexandra Palace in the north of London . The traditional venue was already home to the News of The World Dart Tournament . In 2010 the PDC also had a competition for women and, since 2011, a youth competition. Due to the change of many well-known darts players from the BDO to the PDC, the PDC has meanwhile achieved a greater status than the BDO in international darts.
Nine-darters
The first " nine-darter " at a world championship was
thrown in 1990 by Singaporean Paul Lim , who was then playing for the United States, and is the only one at a BDO world championship to this day. Raymond van Barneveld was the first player to do this at a PDC World Championship. He succeeded in this extremely rare feat on January 2, 2009 when he won the quarter-finals against his Dutch compatriot Jelle Klaasen . On December 28th, 2009 Raymond van Barneveld repeated the nine darts finish at the PDC World Darts Championship 2010. As the second PDC player, Adrian Lewis also had a 9-darter on January 3rd, 2011 in the third leg of the first set of the finals thrown at the PDC World Championship. Third in the league has been Dean Winstanley since December 23, 2012 , who despite this feat failed in the second round of the 2013 World Cup to Vincent van der Voort . The fourth player with a 9-darter is Michael van Gerwen , who threw it in the semi-finals of the 2013 World Cup. At the 2014 World Cup , two players in Terry Jenkins and Kyle Anderson got a 9-darter, but both lost their games; as did Adrian Lewis in his 2015 round of 16 against Raymond van Barneveld . In the semifinals of the 2016 World Cup on January 2nd, the Scot Gary Anderson played a perfect leg against Jelle Klaasen to win the first set.
1 The decision in the 13th and last set was made in what was known as a “Sudden Death” leg, as there was still a tie after the tenth leg (5: 5). The cycle of alternating leg openings that had been carried out up to now was canceled here and replaced by bulling out.
