Adrian Lewis (born January 21, 1985 in Stoke-on-Trent , Staffordshire ) is an English darts player . In 2011 and 2012 he won the PDC World Championship .
Career
Adrian Lewis started his professional career with the Professional Darts Corporation in 2004. He is a protégé of Phil Taylor , who, like Lewis, was born in Stoke-on-Trent . They trained together for a few years, but since the PDC World Darts Championship in 2007 they have gone their separate ways.
His nickname is "Jackpot". He received this because he cracked the jackpot of $ 75,000 at the one -armed bandits in a casino in Las Vegas in 2005 , but was not paid out because he was not yet the required age of 21 to take part in gambling in America allowed to.
His current run-in music is "Reach Up" by Perfecto Allstarz .
When he first participated in the World Cup in 2006, he reached the quarterfinals, but had to admit defeat to Peter Manley . The game caused controversy, as Lewis temporarily left the stage for a few minutes when Manley had spoken to him while throwing and thus irritated. In addition, Lewis threw a blind 180 in this game, so he threw the third arrow while looking away in addition to the first two darts in the triple 20 segment.
Lewis reached his first big final in 2008, but lost the final of the European Darts Championship to his former mentor Taylor 5:11.
At the World Grand Prix 2010 he managed to get into a final, defeating Phil Taylor in the semifinals. This was his first win over his mentor in a major tournament, and only his third win against him in six years, and his first win against Taylor in three years. In the final, however, he lost to James Wade .
At the PDC World Darts Championship 2011 he had the greatest success of his career to date: He won the final against the Scots Gary Anderson 7: 5. Lewis received £ 200,000 for the win. He also became the first player in a World Cup final to achieve a nine dart finish in the third leg of the first set , earning him an additional £ 10,000. Another nine-darter in front of running cameras this calendar year he succeeded in the semifinals of the European Darts Championship 2011 against Raymond van Barneveld .
At the PDC World Darts Championship 2012 he reached the final one more time. There he defeated his compatriot Andy Hamilton 7: 3 and was able to successfully defend his title. After Phil Taylor, he was only the second dart player to succeed (in the meantime Gary Anderson also succeeded), and at the age of 26 is the youngest double world champion in the history of the PDC.
At the PDC World Darts Championship 2013 Lewis played at the highest level again after a previously rather weaker year in 2012, which reflected parallels to his previous seasons, in which he also showed his strongest form, especially at the World Championships. In the quarterfinals of this tournament, he met Michael van Gerwen , whose breakthrough came in this tournament and especially in this match. Both played a 3-dart average of around 100 points, which was considered particularly high at the time. For many it is still considered the best World Cup quarter-finals ever. The encounter also thrived on its immense tension, both winning their sentences practically in lockstep. With 4: 4 sets and 2: 1 legs, the more experienced Lewis seemed to have worked out the decisive advantage and earned two match darts on doubles 20. However, he missed this and van Gerwen then managed an 83 finish and the 2: 2 in the legs. Van Gerwen then used this mental advantage to win in extra time (4-2 legs). Lewis could not defend his title again after a 15 game series of victories at world championships, van Gerwen became vice world champion this year.
In the final of the European Darts Championship 2013 he defeated defending champion Simon Whitlock 11: 6 after legs and secured his first major title of his career, apart from his World Cup triumphs. The World Matchplay could not decide for Lewis, but he was in 2013 in the final, in which he Phil Taylor defeated. He also took revenge on van Gerwen for the lost World Cup quarter-finals six months earlier by defeating him with 17:15 legs in the semi-finals of the tournament.
The 2014 World Cup again resulted in a duel between van Gerwen and Lewis, who met in the semi-finals. The duel, declared as the early final, clearly went to the eventual world champion van Gerwen, who gave Lewis a white wash in the 6-0 win . After many high-class duels, the duels between Michael van Gerwen and Lewis are referred to as the El Clásico of darts alongside the comparison between Taylor and van Barneveld . In 2014 Lewis won his fourth and so far last major title with the UK Open .
During the PDC World Darts Championship 2015 Lewis achieved the only nine dart finish of the tournament. The opponent in the round of 16 was again Raymond van Barneveld, against whom he lost 3: 4 and was eliminated from the tournament.
At the PDC World Darts Championship 2016 Lewis reached the final for the third time in his career and was defeated there by last year's winner Gary Anderson in a new edition of the 2011 final with a score of 5: 7.
At the PDC World Darts Championship 2017 he lost 3: 4 to Raymond van Barneveld in the round of 16. After the Premier League he had to take a break for several weeks and only returned to the World Matchplay , where he surprisingly reached the semifinals. There he failed with 17: 9 to Phil Taylor.
At the PDC World Darts Championship 2018 he surprisingly lost in the first round against the German Kevin Münch , which caused him to drop from 7th to 21st place in the PDC Order of Merit . At a qualifying tournament for the UK Open , Lewis felt provoked by his opponent José Justicia and was violent after the game. Lewis was then fined by the PDC and given a three-month ban, which was suspended for six months.
