The World Matchplay 2017 is a major tournament in darts and was organized by the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) for the 24th time in 2017. It was held in Blackpool's Winter Gardens from July 22nd to 30th, 2017 .

The tournament was won by Englishman Phil Taylor , who defeated Scots Peter Wright in the final with 18: 8 legs and won the World Match Play Cup for the 16th time.

format

The field of participants in the World Matchplay consisted of the Top 16 of the PDC Order of Merit and the Top 16 of the PDC Pro Tour Order of Merit , who were not yet qualified via the Order of Merit. The list of participants was announced on July 10, 2017 after the 16th Players Championship Event .

In the tournament, which was carried out in the knockout system with 32 participants, every game was played in legs. In the first round ten legs had to be won, up to the final the number of legs to be won increased per round, in the final up to 18 winning legs were played.

Until 2012, the World Matchplay differed from other darts tournaments in that no decision leg was scheduled. Instead, the game was played until a player was able to play a two-leg lead. This regulation was changed in 2013. The number of extra legs in which a player can bring about a decision by two legs has since been limited to five. Then a decision leg is played, if necessary, which corresponds to a sudden death .
