Mensur Suljović ( Serbian - Cyrillic Менсур Суљовић * March 5, 1972 in Tutin , SFR Yugoslavia ) is an Austrian darts player . In 2011, 2016 and 2018 he reached the second round of the PDC World Championship . His nickname is "The Gentle".
Career
Suljović started playing e-darts in Vienna and later found his way to steel darts. His first big success was the first place at the E-Darts World Championship in Kalkar in 1999. In Steeldart he reached the second round at the Winmau World Masters in 2000 . In the following years he found darts in Germany. In the meantime, he suffered two years under Dartitis and since then holds his dart "complicated".
In 2007 he took part in the German Darts Corporation Tour. He was ranked first, which enabled him to participate in the PDC World Darts Championship 2008 , where he prevailed against Andy Smith in the first round, then failed in the second round against the eventual winner John Part . Then he was able to qualify for the first edition of the European Darts Championship . There he defeated Roland Scholten in the first round and lost to Robert Thornton in the second round.
Suljović qualified again in 2009 via the GDC Order of Merit at the PDC World Darts Championship . There he prevailed in the first round against Peter Manley , then failed in the second round to Mark Dudbridge . Among other things, this placement brought Mensur Suljović into the top 50 of the PDC Order of Merit . In the European Dart Championship 2009, as in the previous year, he prevailed against Roland Scholten in the first round, then lost the second round again, this time against Colin Lloyd . In 2010 Suljović was able to qualify again for the PDC World Darts Championship , where he was eliminated in the first round against Kevin Painter .
In the next year in the PDC World Darts Championship 2011 he was able to prevail in the first round against Michael van Gerwen. In the second round he surprisingly won against the second in the world rankings James Wade . He was the first German-speaking player to make it to the round of 16 of the World Darts Championship. In the last sixteen he lost to the Briton Wes Newton . At the PDC World Darts Championship 2012 he failed in the first round to Paul Nicholson.
At the PDC World Darts Championship 2014 Suljović was eliminated in the first round against Mark Webster with 2: 3. At the World Matchplay 2015 Suljovic won against Terry Jenkins and reached the quarter-finals with a win against the then world champion Gary Anderson , which he lost to James Wade . In October 2015 he reached the semifinals of the World Grand Prix by winning over James Wade, Simon Whitlock and Vincent van der Voort , which he lost to eventual tournament winner Robert Thornton 2: 4. Also in 2015 Suljović was one of the participants in the PDC World Darts Championship , where he was eliminated against Michael Smith in the first tournament round. On December 28th, 2015 Suljović reached the round of 16 of the PDC World Championship , where he lost with 0: 4 sets against the Englishman Adrian Lewis .
In September 2016 Suljović won his first PDC tournament. He beat Kim Huybrechts 6: 5 in the final of the International Darts Open 2016 in Riesa . A week later he lost the PDC final at the European Darts Trophy 2016 5-6 against Michael van Gerwen. In October 2016 Suljović reached the final of the European Darts Championship by defeating Phil Taylor and Peter Wright , in which he was clearly defeated by Michael van Gerwen with 1:11. Nevertheless, through this success he reached 7th place in the PDC Order of Merit , his highest ranking so far and the highest ranking of a player from the German-speaking area.
His greatest success to date followed in September 2017 when he celebrated his first win at a major TV tournament at the Champions League of Darts in Cardiff. This success brought him the highest place in the world rankings with 6th place, which he had to give back to Daryl Gurney a week later. In mid-November 2017 he reached the quarter-finals at the Grand Slam of Darts in Wolverhampton, which he lost to Gary Anderson , and thus with 5th place his highest place in the PDC Order of Merit . In the following Players Championship Finals , he failed in the 2nd round to Stephen Bunting. He set his best performance at the 2018 World Cup and reached the round of 16 of a Darts World Cup for the third time in his career . Due to his strong 2017 season, he received one of six wildcards for the Premier League Darts 2018 . After the ninth game day, he was eliminated in the so-called Judgment Night . At The Masters 2018 , he improved his previous year's performance and reached the semifinals. He didn't compete in the UK Open 2018 to spend time with his family. On May 25, 2018, he won the German Darts Masters 2018 , which was held in the Gelsenkirchen Veltins-Arena and set a new world record with 20,210 spectators.

Private
Suljović lives in Vienna with his wife and two children . Basketball is one of his hobbies. In Vienna he operated two darts bars at times. After the Dart Club PN closed in 2015, Suljović still ran Café Gentle , but eventually withdrew from this business to concentrate on darts.
