Roland Scholten (born January 11, 1965 in The Hague ) is a former Dutch dart player nicknamed "Tripod" (German: tripod ). Scholten got this nickname because of his stiff posture when throwing darts.

Career

Scholten came to darts at the age of 17 when he started playing games on a steel dartboard in his father's bar.

In 1997 he won the PDC World Pairs Darts Championship together with his Dutch partner Raymond van Barneveld . He played for the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) after he decided in 2001 to pursue darts full-time. Scholten was previously an innkeeper .

He won his only major title at the “Professional Darts Corporation” in 2004 at the UK Open against John Part with 11: 6 points.

In the last few years of his active career, Scholten fell back in the world rankings due to shoulder problems. Most recently, he even had to undergo an operation, which meant that he had to pause for a while and was therefore eliminated from the top 32 in the world rankings. As a result, he was no longer automatically qualified for the major PDC tournaments.

At the side of Elmar Paulke and Tobias Drews , Scholten also worked for Sport1 as a darts commentator. Here Scholten has achieved cult status with some German dart fans through his grammatically incorrect statements and his eye-catching speech melody. At tournaments where Scholten played himself, he often joined the Sport1 commentator team after his departure - for example during the World Matchplays , the European Darts Championship 2010 and the PDC World Darts Championship 2011 , where he was a player in the 1st round against Ronnie Baxter eliminated. Scholten has also worked for Dutch and British television.

Roland Scholten ended his active career in 2014 and has only been available for invitation events and comments for RTL7 in the Netherlands since then.
