Raymond van Barneveld (born April 20, 1967 in The Hague ) is a former darts player . He is considered to be the most successful Dutch darts player to date and has won five world titles. His nicknames are "Barney", "The Dutch Master" and "The Man". His walk-on song was Eye of the Tiger by Survivor .

Career

Since the end of the 1990s, van Barneveld was considered one of the best dart players on the WDF . Between 1998 and 2007 he was five times world darts champion, four times with the BDO and once with the PDC .

Van Barneveld worked as a mail carrier before becoming a professional darts player. He moved to the PDC at the beginning of the Premier League in 2006. There he beat Phil Taylor twice at the UK Open and the Las Vegas Desert Classic . He won the UK Open and lost to John Part at the Las Vegas Desert Classics . With his 7: 6 victory over Taylor in the final of the Darts World Championship on January 1, 2007, van Barneveld was the PDC darts world champion for the first time. In this final he threw the 180 21 times, which has since been the record for a match at the PDC World Championships. Dave Chisnall set this record on December 30th, 2016 at the PDC World Championship 2017 . Van Barneveld was replaced as World Champion by Part on January 1, 2008 after he was eliminated in the round of 16 with 2: 4 sets against Kevin Painter .

Van Barneveld was the first dart player to achieve a nine dart finish , which was broadcast live on German television. He managed this feat on March 23, 2006 during the Holsten Premier League Darts in the 9th leg of his game against Peter Manley . He was able to repeat this performance in the quarter finals of the PDC World Championship 2009 on January 2nd, 2009 against Jelle Klaasen with the first 9-darter at a PDC World Championship. On December 28th, 2009 van Barneveld threw the second 9-darter in the history of the PDC World Championship against Brendan Dolan .

On March 24th 2007 he played as a PDC player in Germany for the first time: at the first GDC ( German Darts Corporation ) ProTour event in Bad Soden. On June 10, 2007 he defended his title at the UK Open against Vincent van der Voort with 16: 8 legs. Before that, he beat Taylor in the quarterfinals 11: 4 legs.

On November 18, 2012 he was able to win another major tournament with the Grand Slam of Darts after five years without a major individual title. He beat Michael van Gerwen in the final with legs 16:14. At the PDC World Darts Championship 2013 he caused a scandal in his semi-final game against Phil Taylor. When he was already 1: 5 behind, his son Mike began to disturb Taylor with constant "miss" calls when he throws. As a result, Taylor lost concentration and van Barneveld was able to reduce the gap to 4: 5 before losing 4: 6. Van Barneveld did not suppress the calls, but only sent greetings with a gesture of thanks to the audience. This incident worsened the relationship between him and Taylor greatly. On May 22, 2014, his first triumph in the Premier League followed by winning the Premier League Darts 2014 . On that day, he beat Taylor in the semifinals, for the first time in the Premier League, and then in the final his compatriot van Gerwen.

The rest of the year was more or less disappointing. Van Barneveld was only able to win the World Cup of Darts together with Michael van Gerwen. At the turn of the year he was able to reach the semifinals of the PDC World Darts Championship 2015 , but then failed to Phil Taylor. The first half of 2015 was marked by an increasingly better performance in the Premier League . The Dutchman made it into the play-offs again, but then lost to Michael van Gerwen in the semi-finals, although van Barneveld narrowly missed a 9-darter on the double-12. The World Matchplay 2015 and the World Grand Prix 2015 ended unsatisfactorily with clear defeats in the first round. At the Grand Slam of Darts 2015 he reached the semi-finals and was defeated by Phil Taylor, but was back in the top 16 of the PDC Order of Merit. At the Players Championship Finals 2015 "Barney" said goodbye to Ian White in the first round .

At the PDC World Darts Championship 2016 van Barneveld surprisingly won 4: 3 in the round of 16 against the number 1 in the world, Michael van Gerwen, after victories over Dirk van Duijvenbode and Stephen Bunting . In the quarterfinals he beat Michael Smith 5: 4 despite a gap of 0: 3, but was eliminated in the semifinals against Adrian Lewis with 3: 6. At the UK Open he was eliminated in round 4 against Phil Taylor with 3: 9. At the World Cup of Darts he reached the final alongside Michael van Gerwen, but lost it to England with 2: 3. At the World Matchplay 2016 van Barneveld was eliminated in round 1 against Brendan Dolan with 7:10. In the second half of the year, “Barney” was able to record further successes. At the World Grand Prix he reached the semi-finals by defeating Mervyn King , Adrian Lewis and Benito van de Pas , but lost it to Gary Anderson with 1: 4. At the Grand Slam of Darts 2016 he also lost to Anderson in the quarterfinals, and to van Gerwen in the quarterfinals of the Players Championship Finals 2016 .

Raymond van Barneveld (2016)

Van Barneveld delivered a strong performance during the 2017 World Cup . After a memorable quarter-final against Phil Taylor (5: 3), Barney could only be stopped in the semifinals by the eventual tournament winner Michael van Gerwen (2: 6). He played the highest average (109.34), which at a World Cup did not qualify for a win was enough. He got off to a strong start in the 2017 Premier League Darts and was third with 12 points after Judgment Night , but in the remaining 7 games he only got 2 points and missed the play-offs in 6th place. With Michael van Gerwen he won the World Cup of Darts for the third time in June .

At the PDC World Darts Championship 2018 he failed again to van Gerwen with 5: 4 in the quarterfinals. At The Masters 2018 he was back in the final after 2015 , but lost 11: 9 to van Gerwen. On April 5, 2018, he lost 7-0 for the first time in the Premier League . It was his first "whitewash" (loss without his own leg win) in the Premier League and only the eighth ever. He finished the Premier League in sixth place.

After losing his second round match against Darius Labanauskas 2: 3 last year , van Barneveld was eliminated in the first round against the American Darin Young at the Word Darts Championship 2020 and then ended his career.
