format

A total of 72 players took part in the tournament. The 32 best placed players of the PDC Order of Merit on November 30, 2015 (after the Players Championship Finals 2015 ) are set as participants. They are complemented by the 16 highest placed players of the PDC Pro Tour Order of Merit who are not already qualified .

These 48 players were completed by 2 qualifiers of the PDPA Qualifiers and 22 international players. These 22 are composed of the 4 best not already qualified players of the European Order of Merit and 18 of the PDPA (Professional Darts Players Association) and the PDC determined players. Some of these international players, such as the 4 best players in the European Order of Merit and the best American and Australian players, competed directly in the first round, while others who had prevailed in the respective national qualifying tournaments went to the preliminary round ( Preliminary Round) had to begin. The winners of this preliminary round moved into the final round of the best 64.

The final round was played in a knockout system . The first round of the tournament took place from December 17th to 23rd, 2015. Game mode in the 1st round was a best of 5 sets . The 32 winners of the 1st round moved into the 2nd round, which took place from December 26th to 29th, 2015. A best of 7 sets was played there. Subsequently, on December 29th and 30th, the last 16 of the best 16 were played, which were also played in best-of-7 mode. The best 8 made it to the quarter-finals on January 1, 2016, in which a best of 9 sets was played. The two semi-finals took place on January 2, 2016. The games were played in the best-of-11 system. The final of the PDC World Darts Championship 2016, which was played in the best-of-13-sets system, took place on January 3, 2016.

Thanawat Gaweenuntawong was the first player from Thailand to take part in a World Darts Championship. He was eliminated in the preliminary round.

Trivia

  • "Master of Ceremonies" was John McDonald.
  • The games were directed by the "callers" Russ Bray , Paul Hinks, George Noble and Kirk Bevins.
  • The players were accompanied on stage by the "walk-on girls" Holly Johnson, Courtney Wallis, Daniella Allfree and Charlotte Wood.
  • In the first round game against Raymond van Barneveld , Dirk van Duijvenbode, curiously, threw the highest number of points with 180 points remaining, so no score was achieved.
  • The two finalists Adrian Lewis and Gary Anderson faced each other in the final of the PDC World Darts Championship 2011 . At that time, Lewis won 7-5.
