Simon Whitlock (born March 3, 1969 in Cessnock ) is an Australian darts player of the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) . His nickname is The Wizard (Eng .: The Magician ). His running-in music at tournaments is " Down Under " by Men at Work . Whitlock currently plays with 22 gram Winmau darts.

Career

In his first year at the PDC, Simon Whitlock was able to collect first successes. In 2003 he reached the third round of the PDC World Darts Championship . There he was eliminated from the Welshman Richie Burnett . Despite this success, he surprisingly switched to the competing darts association British Darts Organization (BDO) at the beginning of 2004 , as significantly more BDO tournaments than PDC tournaments are held in Australia.

A year later he made it to the semi-finals of the BDO World Darts Championships. There he lost clearly with 0: 5 sets against Martin Adams . Furthermore, in 2005 and 2006 he reached the semifinals of the International Darts League (defeats against Mervyn King and Raymond van Barneveld ), a BDO tournament in which PDC players also competed until 2008. Before that, he defeated Phil Taylor in an exciting match in the quarter-finals with 6: 5 sets.

Towards the end of 2007 the first rumors of a return to the PDC arose. However, Whitlock initially decided to stay with the British Darts Organization (BDO). In 2008 he played his last world championship for the BDO. In the first two rounds he beat Edwin Max and Fabian Roosenbrand before he sensationally beat former BDO world champion Ted Hankey with 5-0 sets in the quarter-finals . In the semifinals he defeated the Englishman Brian Woods . This enabled Whitlock to reach the final of a World Darts Championship for the first time. In a high-class final he was defeated by Mark Webster 5: 7.

In March 2009 he announced his return to the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC). In the first round of the PDC World Darts Championship 2010 he defeated Colin Osborne 3: 1. He later beat Wayne Jones and Terry Jenkins . In the quarter-finals, he was also able to defeat world number three James Wade 5: 3. In the semifinals that followed, they saw Raymond van Barneveld again. In a highly dramatic game, Whitlock was able to secure the eleventh and last set with 3-1 legs and defeated Barneveld with 6-5 sets. He was the first Australian to reach the final of the PDC World Darts Championship. There, however, he was defeated by the now 16-time world champion Phil Taylor with 3: 7 and thus became the runner-up world champion in 2010. He secured a prize money of 100,000 pounds.

At the PDC World Darts Championship 2011 he was able to reach the second round after victories over Steve Evans (3: 0) and Denis Ovens (4: 0), which he lost to Vincent van der Voort 2: 4 . A year later, the Australian reached the semi-finals, but lost 5: 6 sets against Andy Hamilton and the second final at the PDC World Championship after a highly dramatic match in which he was already leading 5: 3 sets missed.

At the 2012 World Cup of Darts , Whitlock and Paul Nicholson reached the final against England, which went into a decisive sudden death leg when the score was 3: 3. After Nicholson and Taylor both skipped two match darts for the title, Whitlock had the chance to win the title. However, he also missed two match darts , Adrian Lewis hitting doubles and England the World Cup of Darts.

On September 16, 2012, Whitlock won a Players Championship in Barnsley, celebrating his first tournament success in almost two years. At the European Darts Championship 2012 in Mülheim an der Ruhr , which took place the following week , he achieved successes over Mark Walsh (6: 2), Dave Chisnall (10: 5), Colin Lloyd (10: 7) and the Belgian Kim Huybrechts ( 11: 9) another major final. In that he was able to prevail 11-5 against Wes Newton and win his first big title, combined with prize money of £ 50,000. In the further course of the season Whitlock retired at the World Grand Prix 2012 in the first round (1: 2 against Justin Pipe ). This was followed by victory at the £ 82,100 Dutch Darts Masters with a 6-1 win over Paul Nicholson . By winning Group 5 at the Championship League Darts 2012 , Simon Whitlock qualified for the so-called Winners Group, in which he finished third and finally had to admit defeat to Phil Taylor 4: 6 in the final. In early November, Whitlock won another Players Championship. At the Grand Slam of Darts 2012 , Simon was unlucky enough to be eliminated from the group stage despite two wins. In the last major tournament before the World Cup, the Players Championship Finals , Whitlock was again in good shape and reached the semi-finals, where he once again had no chance against eventual tournament winner Phil Taylor (2:11). At the PDC World Darts Championship 2013 Whitlock won against Haruki Muramatsu (3: 0), Colin Osborne (4: 0) and Dave Chisnall (4: 3) and was able to move into the quarter-finals, where he won Raymond van Barneveld 1: 5 was subject.

Thanks to the good results in 2012, Simon Whitlock was able to secure another wildcard for the Premier League Darts . The first major tournament in 2013 was the World Cup of Darts , in which Whitlock again competed for Australia together with Paul Nicholson. The end there came through a 1: 5 defeat in the round of 16 against Belgium, represented by the brothers Kim and Ronny Huybrechts . The first success of the season for Simon came at the 5th Players Championship 2013 in Wigan , where he beat Michael van Gerwen 6-1 . The Premier League season 2013 finished Whitlock in sixth and could not qualify for the final evening of the best four. At the European Darts Open 2013, which were held in the Maritim Hotel in Düsseldorf , Simon reached the final and lost there with 2: 6 to Michael van Gerwen. At the invitation tournament “Dubai Duty Free Darts Masters”, which was held for the first time in 2013 and took place in the open air in the Dubai Tennis Stadium, he was eliminated on the first evening (quarter-finals) against James Wade with 8:10. He canceled his participation in the Austrian Darts Open shortly afterwards. At the second major of the year, the UK Open, Simon Whitlock was eliminated again in his first game, this time against Wes Newton (4: 9). At the European Darts Championship 2013 , Whitlock reached the final, as in the previous year, but this time lost it against a re-strengthened Adrian Lewis with 6:11. In the third most important tournament of the year, the World Matchplay, Simon was eliminated in a high-class game in the quarter-finals against James Wade 16:18. In the further course of the season Whitlock did not succeed much and in larger tournaments he was eliminated in the first rounds. At the Grand Slam of Darts 2013 , however, he at least survived the group stage this time, only to be eliminated at 9:10 against Ted Hankey . At the PDC World Darts Championship 2014 Simon stayed in the quarterfinals without losing a set, which he won 5: 4 against Ian White . In the semifinals he was ultimately without a chance against a surprisingly strong Peter Wright with 2: 6. By reaching the semi-finals, Simon Whitlock secured £ 50,000 in prize money. With this he climbed one place in the money list and had achieved his best position there with 3rd place. At the same time he was qualified for the upcoming Premier League Darts.

In the Premier League 2014 Whitlock retired after poor performance as the last after the "Judgment Night". At the World Matchplay 2014 he lost the semifinals against Michael van Gerwen . The rest of the year Simon had less success and lost to Darren Webster in the first round of the 2015 World Darts Championship . In the following year 2015 he could not achieve any successes worth mentioning and even fell out of the top 16 after poor performance, after beating 2: 3 in the third set at the 2016 World Cup despite 2-0 set lead and 2-0 lead in legs Ricky Evans lost. In 2016 he reached the quarterfinals of the World Cup of Darts and the World Grand Prix and won two Players Championship events in a row. As a result, he also qualified for the Grand Slam of Darts 2016 , in which, however, he was eliminated in the group stage. It wasn't until 2016 that he recovered and also won three Players Championship events. He finished the Premier League 2018 in eighth place.
