World Darts Championship venue: Alexandra Palace in London

The William Hill World Darts Championship 2019 was held from December 13, 2018 to January 1, 2019 in its 26th edition by the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC). The venue was for the twelfth time the Alexandra Palace in London . For the first time, two places were reserved for women.

In the final, Michael van Gerwen secured his third world title against Michael Smith .

mode

The tournament was played in the best of sets or first to sets mode and the double-out variant .

The first player to win three legs wins a set . The player who throws exactly 501 points first wins a leg . The last throw of a leg must be on a double square.

If the score was 2: 2 legs in a decisive final set , the two-clear legs rule applied (except in the first round) . This states that a player must be two legs ahead to win the game. This creates neither of the two players, the game at the score of 5 is: 5 in the legs by a " sudden death - Leg " decided.

Attendees

qualification

Unlike in previous years, the 2019 World Championship featured 96 players instead of 72. The field of participants consisted of the 32 best placed players of the PDC Order of Merit from November 25, 2018, the top 32 unqualified players of the PDC Pro Tour Order of Merit and 32 international players of the World Championship International Qualifiers.

Two of the 24 additional places were given to female participants. There was also one qualifier each from Africa, China, India, Japan, New Zealand and South America as well as four qualifiers from Europe (East, South, South-West and West).

The seeded players (Top 32 of the PDC Order of Merit) only entered the tournament in the second round.

In German-speaking countries, the Sport1 broadcaster broadcast all the tournament's matches live. The online streaming service DAZN also broadcast all sessions live.

Due to statements criticized as sexist on the evening of December 17, 2018, Sport1 stopped working with co-host Gordon Shumway. On the morning of December 19, Sport1 announced on Twitter that it would "no longer use Shumway as an expert and co-commentator".
