The Alexandra Palace (also known by the nickname Ally Pally ) was 1873 as Leisure park The People's Palace on a hill in the north of London Borough of Haringey opened. The building and the surrounding park were named after Crown Princess Alexandra of Denmark .

Two weeks after opening, the building designed by John Johnson and Alfred Meeson burned down almost completely, but was rebuilt over the next two years.

During the First World War , the facility was closed and initially acted as a refugee camp for Belgians who had fled . From 1915 to 1919 it served as an internment camp for civilians from Germany , Austria-Hungary and the Ottoman Empire .

Due to its exposed location, the Alexandra Palace was used for the first television broadcasts of the BBC from 1935 . Since then, it has been broadcast from the south-east tower of the facility.

On April 29, 1967, the Alexandra Palace hosted a spectacular festival entitled The 14 Hour Technicolor Dream , which for the first time offered a large stage to the new cultural developments in the London underground . Participants included Deviants , Soft Machine , Creation , Tomorrow , Yoko Ono and Pink Floyd . The latter were placed here by Peter Whitehead for his film Tonite Lets All Make Love in London filmed .

In 1980 a fire destroyed large parts of the complex except for the palm courtyard and the building elements occupied by the BBC. In 1988 it was reopened after restoration .

The BRIT Awards were given here from 1993 to 1995 . In 1996 the Palace was also the venue for the MTV Europe Music Awards .

Since December 2007 the Alexandra Palace has been the annual venue for the PDC World Darts Championship . This continues the long tradition of darts tournaments in the Palace, in which, among other things, the News of the World Darts Tournament , the oldest darts tournament in the world, was held until 1990 . In 2007, the Premier League Darts also made a guest appearance on matchday 13 at the Ally Pally .

Alexandra Palace has also hosted the prestigious Snooker Masters since 2012 . Since 2016 is Ally Pally the European venue of the Mosconi Cup - one 9-Ball - Pool -Mannschaftsturnier between the United States and Europe - which alternately takes place in the US and Europe each year.

Historic building fabric

Two of the BBC's studios still exist today as museum rooms which, among other things, show historical production and broadcasting systems. The Victorian Theater and its stage machinery are also preserved. The theater and its stage structure are considered endangered and have been listed in the English Heritage's Buildings at Risk register since 1996 .

Directions

The building can be reached with the Piccadilly Line of London Underground via Wood Green station . Great Northern suburban trains stop at Alexandra Palace Station on the East Coast Main Line . Furthermore, there was formerly train traffic to the now closed stations Alexandra Palace on the Muswell Hill Branch and Palace Gates on the Palace Gates Line .
