The Creation were an English beat group from the 1960s.

Band history

The group was founded in 1963 under the name Blue Jacks. A short time later, the name was first changed to Mark Four, which included John Dalton , who later switched to the Kinks as bassist . In 1966 the final name was found and from that point on the band consisted of singer Kenny Pickett, guitarist Eddie Phillips, bassist Bob Garner and drummer Jack Jones . Their manager was Tony Stratton-Smith, who later became the founder of Charisma Records . In England the group flopped, but in Germany they had a large fan base, especially in 1967. Much like The Who and The Kinks , The Creation had a hard guitar sound. Her guitarist Eddie Phillips was the first to play the guitar with a violin bow and to achieve previously unknown sound effects. Due to internal problems, Garner and Phillips left in 1967, replacing Kim Gardner (bass) and Ron Wood (guitar), both of whom had previously played at Santa Barbara Machine Head .

After the hits failed to materialize in 1968, the band split up. In June 1968 the band gave their last concert in London .

Further career of the band members

Kenny Pickett retired from the stage, worked as a tour manager and driver, and wrote songs for other performers. It was not until 1979 that he brought out more singles, but under the name Kennedy Express . Clive Dunn (Granded) and Blue Mink (Our World) were initially quite successful with his compositions . With the disco version of Painterman , covered by Boney M. , the Pickett / Phillips writing team achieved an unexpectedly great success. Their song Teacher Teacher was recorded in 1980 by the English band Rockpile . The English band The Woolpackers took over four songs from the Phillips / Garner writing team for their album Emmerdance in 1996 .

Eddie Phillips continued to work as a songwriter, released several singles and a CD. Bob Garner worked as a solo entertainer under the name Bobby Grand in the 1970s. Jack Jones has taken on a civil profession. Kim Gardner founded the trio Ashton, Gardner & Dyke in 1968 with Tony Ashton and Roy Dyke . After the end (1973) he joined Badger . Ron Wood joined the Faces . He has been part of the Rolling Stones since 1975 . John Dalton was a member of the Kinks from 1969 to 1976 .

Reunion

Around 1984 recordings were made for an album that was not released. In 1993 the band got together again and recorded the live album Lay The Ghost . They were surprised by the popularity of the fans and promised another studio album.

In 1996, The Creation kept that promise. In addition, they release the single Creation on the English label Creation, which had chosen its name after the band . The record company successfully promoted Creation from The Creation to Creation. After the appearance of Power Surge and Creation, a comeback was within reach.

The sudden death of singer Kenny Pickett on January 10, 1997 thwarted these plans. In the meantime, bassist Kim Gardner passed away on October 24, 2001.

In 2004 the album The Psychedelic Rose with the unpublished recordings from 1984 was released.

Others

The band inspired several neo-mod and indie-pop bands in the 1980s. a. the British formations Makin 'Time and Biff Bang Pow around Alan McGhee after early song titles of Creation. McGhee was also the founder and head of the well-known indie pop record label Creation Records . The English neo-mod group The Times named their debut single Red With Purple Flashes after Eddie Phillips gave a press quote in 1966 to underline the pop art influence of the band.
