Charisma Records was an English record label that existed from 1968 to 1986.

Label history

Tony Stratton-Smith (1933–1987) founded the label in 1968 under the name The Famous Charisma Label . He had previously made a name for himself as the manager of bands such as The Nice , The Creation and The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band . His label gave mostly hitherto unknown artists the chance to present their music to a broader public and survived their unsuccessful times.

Stratton-Smith had a keen sense of the progressive market, his engagement with Genesis , Lindisfarne , Van der Graaf Generator , The Nice, Rare Bird , Audience , Refugee , Brand X and many other bands was trend-setting and successful.

The first single hit for Charisma landed in 1970 Rare Bird with the track Sympathy , while the LP Fog On The Tyne by the group Lindisfarne in 1971 first reached the top of the English charts. In the years that followed, Genesis finally brought the label its greatest commercial success.

Stratton-Smith gave its contract partners the chance to release records for their solo projects, especially Peter Hammill (Van der Graaf Generator) and Peter Gabriel and Steve Hackett (both from Genesis). The label also had “speech records” on offer, including several by Monty Python .

In total, Charisma published 174 LPs and more than 400 singles, but also published books and produced films. The company logo was easy to remember. B. adorned the labels of the records: a drawing of the Mad Hatter (and other elements) from Alice in Wonderland by John Tenniel .

In 1985 Charisma Records was sold to Richard Branson's Virgin Records because Stratton-Smith wanted to focus on film production. This did not happen because he died in 1987.

In the years 1970 to 1984, the publications of charisma were Germany with Phonogram sold.
