Julian Lennon, 2015

John Charles Julian Lennon (born April 8, 1963 in Liverpool , England ) is a British musician , composer and photographer . He is the son of John Lennon from his first marriage to Cynthia Powell . Julian Lennon is the half-brother of Sean Lennon , whose parents are John Lennon and Yoko Ono .

Life

childhood

Julian Lennon attended Ruthin School near the town of Ruthin in Denbighshire in North Wales .

Julian Lennon's mother married three more times after divorcing John Lennon. Julian Lennon says he never got to know a harmonious family life, as his father left the family in 1968 and from then on lived with Yoko Ono, whom he married in March 1969. His childhood was also marked by changing partnerships with his mother and disappointments from his father. However, John Lennon sought contact with his growing son from his first marriage since 1973, while living with his partner May Pang during this time. During the visits, but Julian had in the United States go because his father lived since September 1971 in the USA and he got 1,972 problems with the residency in the US a year, it was threatened with expulsion, reason was the growing fears of the CIA before a "radicalizing" artist John Lennon. So John Lennon could not leave the USA during this time. But even after receiving the green card in October 1975, John Lennon no longer went to Great Britain.

During a visit in the summer of 1974, when Julian was eleven at the time, he played drums on a 30-second version of Ya Ya while his father sang and played the piano. The song was released on John Lennon's album Walls and Bridges .

Julian Lennon last saw his father in April 1979 while on vacation together in Palm Beach , Florida . Shortly before John Lennon's murder in 1980, the (telephone) contact was particularly intense, according to Julian Lennon's information.

In retrospect, Julian Lennon was critical of his relationship with his father in 2000 and 2010.

Beatles inspirations

Julian Lennon inspired two well-known Beatles titles . His father John wrote Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds in 1967 after Julian showed him one of his drawings and explained it to him as "Lucy in the sky with diamonds ...". This background information was distributed not least to counter the obvious interpretation that the initials of the song title alluded to LSD . In 1968 Paul McCartney wrote Hey Jude . The idea for the title came to him while he was on his way back from visiting Cynthia Lennon. The play was supposed to be a consolation for Julian, since his parents had just divorced. Hey Jude was first called Hey Jules . Years later, Julian Lennon bought Hey Jude's original manuscript .

Good Night , a track on The Beatles album , is a song written by John Lennon to his son Julian, although it was sung by Ringo Starr .

Own musical career

In October 1984 Julian Lennon released the album Valotte under the leadership of well-known producer Phil Ramone . The single Too Late for Goodbyes reached number six in the British single charts and number five in the USA, while the single Valotte also reached the top ten in the USA. The album sold 1.5 million times worldwide.

Julian Lennon played guitar, drums, percussions, bass and keyboards on his debut album. What impressed the audience was his looks and voice, both of which are very reminiscent of his father. There were rumors that there could be a Beatles reunion - with Julian Lennon as a substitute. His former school friend Justin Clayton played guitar on the album Valotte and future albums up to and including 2011 and was also co-composer on some of the songs.

In November 1985 the single Because , sung by Julian Lennon, was released , it was released from the musical Time by Dave Clark , the further single Time Will Teach Us All with Lennon as singer was released in May 1986.

After a successful North American tour in 1985, Lennon released his second album The Secret Value of Daydreaming in March 1986 , but was only able to place one single in the US Top 40, the album achieved gold status in the USA . Another North American tour followed in 1986, the European tour was canceled due to insufficient ticket demand.

He then retired to Switzerland to calmly reflect on his career. In November 1986 the single Midnight Smoke from the Mike Batt musical The Hunting of the Snark was released, also here Julian Lennon was a guest singer.

The third album Mr. Jordan from March 1989 was the first attempt to emancipate himself from his father. Critics drew comparisons to David Bowie , but his record company was unhappy with the product. Due to the lack of promotion, hardly anyone noticed the album. From July 1989, Julian went on a short tour of Great Britain and the USA. In October 1989, the soundtrack for the television series Wonderful Years appeared , on which Julian Lennon was represented with a cover version of the Rolling Stones play Ruby Tuesday .

In August 1991 Lennon released his next album Help Yourself . The single Saltwater was a commercial success, with the exception of the USA. The single reached number 1 in Australia. Marked by years of alcohol and drug consumption, Lennon first moved to northern Italy and then to southern France to gain distance from the music business. For years he didn't touch an instrument and occupied himself with architecture and cooking. In December 1995 the soundtrack album Mr. Holland's Opus was released , in which Lennon contributed the song Cole's Song .

In May 1998, his fifth album, Photograph Smile , was released, for which he founded the Music from Another Room label . “I didn't want my last few albums to be my legacy to the music industry. They just weren't good enough. I wanted to make an album that I could be proud of. One that I was in control of, ”he explained in a 1999 interview. A club tour in North America followed in 1999.

Then he withdrew again into private life. An album announced at the beginning of the new millennium did not appear. In August 2001, the compilation album VH1 Behind the Music: The Julian Lennon Collection was released.

After three years, Lennon went back to his website in September 2005 to say he was rejecting any interview requests on the 25th anniversary of his father's death. “My dad was a great talent whose music and ideals inspired millions of people. Still, I have mixed feelings about him. He was the father I loved, but he let me down in so many ways. Who knows how our relationship would have developed if he hadn't been murdered [...] ”, he explained there.

In 2006, the duet with Gregory Darling New Dream appeared on Darling's album Shell . When Lucy Vodden, Lennon's former school friend and inspiration for the Beatles' title Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, died in 2009, Lennon released the charity single Lucy in memory of Vodden under his name after an eleven year break . Further releases in 2011 were on the compilation album Shine on! Volume One with the song Children of the World and another duet December Sky with Tomi Swick.

On October 3, 2011, Lennon's sixth studio album Everything Changes was released in the UK. Some of the songs on the album were previously available as raw mixes on Lennon's Myspace profile. Starting in June 2013, the album was also released internationally with two additional songs. On April 8, 2013, on his 50th birthday, the single Someday , a duet with Steven Tyler , was released. Between 2012 and 2014 the following duets were released that are not on his album: Hope (with Nick Wood), All that You've Wanted (with Matt Backer), Luv XXX (with Aerosmith ), Rain in England ( with Tony Mortimer ), Let You Go and Fallin In Love (with Dave Harris), Do You Think I'm A Joke? (with Andrew Cole) and High Road (with Brent Bourgeois). In 2014 Julian Lennon contributed the song Goodbye to the soundtrack Price Of Desire . In December 2016, 25 years after it was first published, Julian Lennon released a new recording of the song Saltwater under the title Saltwater 25 .
