Sean Lennon
Sean Taro Ono Lennon ( Japanese 小野 太郎 Ono Tarō ; born October 9, 1975 in New York , USA ) is an American musician . He is the son of John Lennon and Yoko Ono and the half-brother of Julian Lennon and Kyoko Chan Cox.
Life
Sean Lennon's life has been shaped by his famous parents since he was born. John Lennon retired from the music business between 1975 and 1980 and dedicated himself to the family. On the album Double Fantasy John Lennon sings in the song Beautiful Boy (Darling Boy) about his son Sean. After the assassination of John Lennon on December 8, 1980, Sean Lennon was shielded from the public by his mother for several years.
Five-year-old Sean Lennon tells a short story on the Yoko Ono album Season of Glass . In September 1984, the Yoko Ono tribute album Every Man Has a Woman was released, Sean Lennon sang the song It's Alright on it . On the Yoko Ono album Starpeace , released in November 1985, he sang in the background on the song of the same name. In 1988, 13-year-old Sean Lennon appeared with Michael Jackson in his video for Smooth Criminal and the Jackson motion picture Moonwalker . He has been giving interviews and talking about his father since around 1990. In 1990 a compilation CD- EP was released in Japan with the title Happy Birthday, John , on which the Beatles song Dear Prudence sung by Sean Lennon is. In January 1991 Lennon took part in a re-recording of the song Give Peace a Chance . In April 1991 the album Mama Said by Lenny Kravitz was available, which contains the joint composition All I Ever Wanted by Kravitz / Lennon.
On January 28, 1995, Yoko Ono recorded with Sean Lennon, Paul and Linda McCartney and their four children the song Hiroshima Sky Is Always Blue , which was broadcast on Japanese radio and has only been available on bootlegs so far . In 1995, Yoko Ono went into the studio with her son and musicians Timo Ellis and Sam Koppelman and recorded the album Rising . The three musicians called themselves IMA and were musically active as a music group even before the recordings. They were named on the cover of the CD as equal to Yoko Ono. Ima is Japanese and means "now" in German. Then Yoko Ono went with the backing band consisting of: Sean Lennon ( guitar , keyboards and backing vocals), Timo Ellis ( drums ) and Andrew Weiss ( bass ). on a tour. While working on the remix album by Yoko Ono Rising Mixes , Sean Lennon met Miho Hatori and Yuka Honda, who were members of the group Cibo Matto , who asked him to join the group as a bass player for a tour. Sean Lennon accepted the offer and also starred on the EP Super Relax (January 1997) and the album Stereo ★ Type A (June 1999) by Cibo Matto .
In May 1998, Sean Lennon's debut album Into the Sun was released on Grand Royal, the Beastie Boys record label . Lennon had recorded all the instruments himself, the producer was Yuka Honda. The album received good reviews but was not a commercial success. In the US it only reached # 153 on the charts. In February 1999 the EP Half Horse, Half Musician was released in Japan . It contains unreleased songs and remixes from Into the Sun .
On October 2, 2001, a John Lennon tribute concert was held at Radio City Music Hall in New York City and was broadcast and marketed under the title Come Together: A Night for John Lennon's Words and Music . Sean Lennon sang the Beatles songs This Boy and Julia with Rufus Wainwright .
In November 2001 the Yoko Ono album Blueprint for a Sunrise was released , as with the previous album , the main studio musicians were again Sean Lennon, Timo Ellis and Sam Koppelman, this time their group name IMA was not listed on the cover of the CD. Lennon used the eight years between the two studio albums for a musical collaboration with Deltron 3030 , Handsome Boy Modeling School , Vincent Gallo , Thurston Moore , John Zorn , Ryan Adams , Jordan Galland and Ben Lee, among others .
In 2001, Sean Lennon moved to the Capitol Records label . There he released the album Friendly Fire in October 2006 , which has the diversity of musical styles in common with the debut album, whereby the freeform tendencies of the time have now given way to more traditional song structures and a more uniform theme. Lennon also made a short film for each track on the album, directed by Michele Civetta . In these music videos, which together form a concept work about betrayal and the failure of love, Lennon appeared with friends such as Lindsay Lohan , Bijou Phillips , Asia Argento , Carrie Fisher , Devon Aoki , Jordana Brewster and Jordan Galland . He composed Friendly Fire mostly on his own, but for the recordings of the songs, which were mostly recorded live in a single take , he put together a band with changing line-ups. With Jon Brion (organ, guitar and occasionally drums), Yuka Honda (piano, keyboards, bass), Harper Simon (guitar) and Bijou Phillips ( backing vocals ). Lennon was also assisted in the recording by producer and sound engineer Tom Biller and drummer Matt Chamberlain . Even friendly fire was commercially unsuccessful and reached # 152 American US in the charts.
In 2008, Sean Lennon and his partner Charlotte Kemp Muhl formed the duo The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger. In 2009 the two founded the music label Chimera Music , the label's first release was the compilation album Chimera Music Release No 0 , which partly contains previously unreleased songs by Sean Lennon, followed in October 2009 by the soundtrack album Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Undead . In September 2009, Yoko Ono released the album Between My Head and the Sky on Chimera Music under the artist name Yoko Ono / Plastic Ono Band, none of the original band members or studio musicians of the 1970s except Yoko Ono was present when the Plastic Ono Band was founded. Sean Lennon, who produced the album, also became a member of the Plastic Ono Band . in October 2010 Lennon and Kemp released their debut album Acoustic Sessions . Four months later, in February 2011, the album La Carotte Bleue followed .
In September 2012 the album Black Hole Lace was released under the artist name Kemp & Eden , a project by Eden Rice and Charlotte Kemp Muhl. The album was co-produced by Sean Lennon, who also contributes most of the instrumentation and the background vocals and co-composed three songs. In January 2013, Sean Lennon released two more albums, the soundtrack album Alter Egos and the instrumental album Mystical Weapons with drummer Greg Saunier . Lennon, Saunier and Shazad Ismaily released the almost 20-minute live single Grotesque in November 2013 under the artist name Mystical Weapons . In September 2013, the Yoko Ono album Take Me to the Land of Hell , co-produced by Sean Lennon , was released, which in turn was released under the artist name Yoko Ono / Plastic Ono Band , he was also significantly involved as a studio musician.
In April 2014, the third album was The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger (The GOASTT) entitled Midnight Sun published. It was instrumented and produced much more elaborately than its two predecessors. The album reached number 182 in the US charts. Two EPs followed, Long Gone in September 2014 and Goastt Stories in May 2015 . Another Sean Lennon soundtrack, Ava's Possessions , was released in March 2016.
In January 2016, Sean Lennon and Les Claypool announced that they had formed the duo The Claypool Lennon Delirium and will be touring this summer. Her debut album Monolith of Phobos was released in June 2016 and reached number 84 in the US charts. In April 2017 the release of an EP with four cover versions under the title Lime And Limpid Green followed .
In 2017 Lennon recorded the song Tomorrow Never Came with Lana Del Rey and in 2018 the John Lennon composition Happy Xmas (War Is Over) with Miley Cyrus and Mark Ronson . The Claypool's second album Lennon Delirium , entitled South of Reality , was released in February 2019.
