Lust for Life ( English for "lust for life") is the fifth studio album by the American pop singer Lana Del Rey .

Creation and artwork

All pieces on the album were written by Lana Del Rey, partly in collaboration with changing co-authors. As with the previous albums, Rick Nowels was at her side again on almost all of the pieces, with Nowels not being involved as a composer or songwriter on only two pieces. In about half of all songs, the two were supported by other co-authors. The American rapper A $ AP Rocky co-wrote two pieces under his real name Rakim Mayers , making him the only co-author who has worked on more than one song, all other authors only wrote one song for the album. With the exception of one or two tracks, all pieces on the album were also produced by Del Rey and Nowels. The two produced most of the titles together with US producers Kieron Menzies and Dean Reid. In addition, the producers Benny Blanco , Boi 1da, Emile Haynie, Sean Ono Lennon and Jahaan Sweets appear here and there. The mastering of Lust for Life was done by Adam Ayan, only the song Love was mastered by Mike Bozzi. The album was mixed under the direction of Menzies, with the exception of two pieces Reid was at his side. Menzies and Reid were supported by Blanco and Haynie on the song Love and by Matthew Cullen on Tomorrow Never Came . The final engineering was also carried out by Menzies and Reid, with Trevor Yasuda at their side. For some titles, the three received further support such as Chris Garcia, Hector Delgado and Jordan Stilwell. The album was recorded in London , Los Angeles and Santa Monica, among others . Lust for Life was released under the music labels Interscope Records and Polydor and distributed through Universal Music Distribution .

On the cover of the album - next to the artist name and song title - you can see a smiling Del Rey. Del Rey wears a white lace dress and flowers in her hair and stands in front of a pickup truck . The outfit is the same as the one from her music video for the first single, Love . As has often been the case in the past, the cover image and photographs in the booklet were again shot by Del Rey's sister Caroline "Chuck" Grant, together with Neil Krug. The design comes from Markus Bagå and Mat Maitland. Del Rey first published the cover image on their Facebook page on April 11, 2017.

Publication and promotion

The initial release of Lust for Life took place worldwide on July 21, 2017. The album consists of 16 new studio recordings and is available on CD and download. In the United States, a "Target Edition" of the album was released at the same time, which also includes a Del Reys poster. Lust for Life was released as a vinyl record on October 6, 2017 .

background information

In Groupie Love and Summer Bummer it is not the first collaboration between Del Rey and A $ AP Rocky. Del Rey and Rocky have worked together many times in the past. In 2012, Rocky made an appearance as John F. Kennedy in Del Rey's music video for National Anthem . In the same year the song Ridin 'was written . The piece was originally supposed to appear on the mixtape Follow the Leaders by The KickDrums, but the decision was made not to publish the piece due to a leak .

In an interview, Del Rey said the following about her relationship with Rocky: “I've been in touch with him since National Anthem . He travels a lot, but whenever he's in town… I'll come down to the studio and hear what he's working on and just do background vocals on his tracks. There are probably a lot of tracks somewhere that we're both on. ”(I've been in contact with him since National Anthem . He tears a lot, but whenever he's in town ... then I come to his studio, hear myself the stuff he's working on and record some backing vocals for him. There might be some songs somewhere where the two of us can be heard.)

content

All the lyrics on the album are in English and are written by Del Rey, who wrote the pieces with changing co-authors. All pieces are new compositions, with the beginning of the piece 13 Beaches containing an original recording by Candace Hilligoss from Herk Harvey's Dance of Dead Souls from 1962. Musically, the songs range from dream pop , indie pop and indie rock . In Tomorrow Never Came is a tribute to Tomorrow Never Knows the Beatles . Del Rey talks about her ideal of a relationship, and she mentions John Lennon and Yoko Ono as examples . She received musical support for the piece from their son Sean Ono Lennon . In addition to the collaboration with Ono, the album includes four other guest contributions in which Del Rey received musical support from A $ AP Rocky , Playboi Carti, Stevie Nicks and The Weeknd . The collaboration with Nicks from Fleetwood Mac came about because Del Rey really wanted a woman on her album. She is a "wonderful singer" and when she first met her, Del Rey was "really" nervous. For each of her songs she was accompanied by various instrumentalists (see contributors).

Del Rey himself said of the album: “I made my first four albums for myself, but this one is only for my fans now. I hope that it goes exactly in the direction in which we all - I believe - have developed. ”She also revealed that she is currently having more fun in her life than in previous years, and that is reflected reflected in the album. In Coachella - Woodstock in My Mind, she wishes for a peaceful, relaxed time and asks herself where the golden hippie era is going , while in God Bless America - And All the Beautiful Women in It she sings about threatening scenarios around Donald Trump . The song Love is about how the world belongs to the young and in love, and in When the World Was at War We Kept Dancing she wonders if this is the end of America. In Lust for Life she takes up the topic of love again together with The Weeknd .

Reviews

Toni Hennig from the German-language online magazine laut.de awarded Lust for Life five stars out of a possible five. He described the music as almost perfect pop between hippy and trap . He is of the opinion that Del Rey's reputation as the sad-looking "suburban Lolita ", who pokes at the bad boys in the " James Dean look " in her lyrics , is finally a thing of the past. So far she would not have captured all of her strengths so compactly on album length as with Lust for Life . In addition, this album deals with a few "wonderfully memorable lines" that would certainly give food for thought in uncertain political times. Together with the "producer icon" Nowels, she is already creating "almost" perfect pop music . The online editorial team put the album at number twelve in their top 50 albums of 2017.

Kevin Long of GQ magazine compared the album to Lorde's melodrama . The album is a "completed work of art", an "antidote" to the "banal" acts that currently dominate the charts. Long thinks that Lust for Life is one of the best albums of the year to date.

Stephan Müller from the German-language online magazine plattentests.de awarded seven out of ten points and highlighted the pieces 13 Beaches , Heroin , Love and In My Feelings as “highlights”. He comes to the conclusion that the album combines the “single suitability” and the “hip-hop beats” of Born to Die with the intense, cinematic and sultry atmosphere of honeymoon . Several traps flow through Del Rey's gently orchestral “vintage sound”. She sets the highlights herself, without the help of her guest musicians. Müller is of the opinion that Del Rey has never sung so well.

The Billboard magazine named Lust for Life "Album of the Week". The Rolling Stone rated the album 3.5 out of five stars.

The album is nominated for the Grammys 2018 in the category "Best Pop Album".

Charts and chart placements

Lust for Life reached position eight in the album charts in Germany and stayed in the top 10 for a week and in the charts for ten weeks. In Austria the album reached position five and was also able to stay in the top 10 for one week and in the charts for seven weeks. In Switzerland, Lust for Life was in second position and was in the top 10 for three weeks and in the charts for ten weeks. In the UK, the album topped the charts and stayed there for a week, three weeks in the top 10 and twelve weeks in the charts. In the United States, Lust for Life also topped the Billboard 200, where the album lasted one week, two weeks in the top 10 and 22 weeks in the charts. In 2017, the album was ranked 93rd in the annual album charts in Switzerland, 100th in the United Kingdom and 142nd in the United States. The album also topped the charts in Australia , Canada , Norway , Portugal and Sweden .

For Del Rey this is the sixth chart success in the US album charts and the fourth in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. It is her fifth top 10 success in her home country and fourth in the other four countries mentioned. It is her third number one success in the UK and her second in the United States after Ultraviolence .
