Summertime Sadness ( English for 'summer sadness') is a song by the American pop singer Lana Del Rey . The piece is the sixth single from their second studio album Born to Die .

Creation and artwork

The song was written by Lana Del Rey and Rick Nowels . The single was produced by Emile Haynie; co-produced by Nowels. The single was mastered in the New York Mastering Palace, under the direction of the American Dave Kutch. The song was mixed by the Guatemalan sound engineer Manny Marroquin, assistant was Duncan Fuller. The instrumentalists were Emile Haynie on keyboard and drums, Dan Heath on flute, Patrick Warren as additional guitarist, keyboard player and string instrumentalist, Rick Nowels as additional string instrumentalist and Devrim Karaoglu on the pads. Larry Gold was in charge of the string instruments. The song was released under the music labels Interscope Records , Ministry of Sound Australia and Spinnin 'Records and distributed through Universal Music Publishing . On the cover of the maxi singles you can see - next to artist name and song title - Del Rey sitting in a car. Only the Spinnin 'Records logo can be seen on the cover of the later released remix version.

Publication and promotion

The first publication of Summertime Sadness took place on 22 June 2012 as the download single. The physical maxi single was first published a month later, on July 13, 2012, in Germany, Austria and Switzerland . The maxi single is available as a 2-track single with another remix version and as a 12 " vinyl record with a total of four remix versions of Summertime Sadness . On March 4, 2013, the single was re-released in a version mixed by Cedric Gervais released many different remix singles and EPs , all of which differ in the number and selection of their B-sides.

Summertime Sadness performed live on the radio or radio in Germany, Austria and Switzerland to this day. She only played the song at her concerts.

Music video

The music video for Summertime Sadness was shot in April and May 2012 and premiered on July 20, 2012 on Del Rey's YouTube account. In the music video, Del Rey can be seen together with American actress Jaime King . The video shows an intimate friendship between two women, one of whom commits suicide. The total length of the video is 4:42 minutes. Directed by Kyle Newman and Spencer Susser. To date, the video has over 300 million views on YouTube, making it Del Rey's second most watched music video on the video platform after Young & Beautiful (as of August 2019).
