West Coast ( English for " West Coast ") is a song by the American pop singer Lana Del Rey . The piece is the first single from their third studio album Ultraviolence .

Creation and artwork

The song was written by Lana Del Rey and Rick Nowels . The single was produced by Dan Auerbach . The single was mastered by Metropolis Mastering in London , under the direction of the British John Davis. The song was arranged by Collin Dupuis. The instrumentalists were Dan Auerbach on electric guitar, guitar, shaker and synthesizer, Nick Movshon on electric bass and drums and Maximilian Weissenfeldt on drums. The song was released under the music labels Interscope Records and Polydor . On the cover of the maxi singles - in addition to the inscription of the artist and the song title - Del Rey can be seen against the background of a sunset on the beach. The cover picture was shot by the American photographer Neil Krug.

Publication and promotion

The first release of West Coast was on 14 April 2014 digital promotional single place. Two weeks before the release, Del Rey announced that West Coast would be the first single from their new album. A week later, on April 10, 2014, she presented the cover picture for the single for the first time. The digital maxi single was first released on April 22, 2014 in the United States. Music video

The black and white music video for West Coast was filmed on April 4, 2014 in Los Angeles and premiered on May 9, 2014 on YouTube . As early as May 1, 2014, Del Rey presented a first excerpt from the video on her Instagram profile. In the video, Del Rey is supported by model and actor Bradley Soileau, as in Blue Jeans and Born to Die . At the beginning of the video, Del Rey and Soileau walk along the beach with friends before they plunge into the floods of LA. Afterwards, Del Rey can be seen along with tattoo artist Mark Mahoney during a car ride during which they get physically closer. Excerpts from the beach and the car scene follow. At the end, Del Rey is seen standing on fire in a red dress and a leather jacket. Throughout the video, self-made excerpts from the booth can be seen again and again. Del Rey first played West Coast live on April 13, 2014 at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival . Marc Hogan from the US magazine Spin called the song "atmospheric". CultNoise called the song a "vintage classic ..., heartbreakingly beautiful and excellently composed" and awarded 9/10 points. MUUMUSE described the song as "revolutionary" and completely different from what is currently heard in popular music. They gave 5/5 points.

West Coast reached position 22 in the singles charts in Germany and stayed in the charts for a total of 14 weeks. In Austria the single reached position 39 in four weeks. In Switzerland the single reached position 13 and stayed in the charts for a total of 13 weeks. In the United Kingdom, the single reached position 21 and stayed in the charts for six weeks. In the USA the single reached position 17 in two chart weeks. Furthermore, the single reached the top position in Russia.

For Del Rey as a performer, it is the eighth chart success in Germany and Austria, the ninth in Switzerland and the United Kingdom and the fourth in the United States. As a writer, it is her eighth chart success in Germany, Switzerland and the United Kingdom, as well as the seventh in Austria and the fourth in the United States.
