Stevie Nicks
Stephanie Lynn "Stevie" Nicks (born May 26, 1948 in Phoenix , Arizona ) is an American singer and composer . She had success as a soloist and in various line-ups and became world-famous as a composer, singer and front woman of the band Fleetwood Mac .
Life
Nicks is the daughter of Jess Nicks (1925-2005), president of the meat packaging company Armor-Dial (part of Greyhound Lines since 1971 ), and the housewife Barbara Nicks (1927-2011). Nick's grandfather Aaron Jess Nicks (1892–1974) was a country singer and sang duets with Nick when she was four years old.
In 1968 Stevie Nicks founded the band Fritz together with Lindsey Buckingham and two other friends in California . The group became relatively well known in the West Coast music scene, playing as the opening act for Jimi Hendrix , Janis Joplin and Creedence Clearwater Revival , among others . In 1972 the band broke up again. Stevie Nicks recorded a joint album in 1973 with her then partner Lindsey Buckingham under the name Buckingham Nicks , but it was not a success.
Together with Buckingham, Nicks joined the previously purely English blues band Fleetwood Mac , founded by Peter Green and Mick Fleetwood in 1975 . After Green, Danny Kirwan and Jeremy Spencer left, as well as other musicians who were briefly “guest” musicians, the band then became an English-American rock group through the two (Nicks and Buckingham). With her compositions and her smoky voice, she shaped some of the group's greatest hits on the successful albums Fleetwood Mac (1975), Rumors (1977) and Tusk (1979), for example her composition Dreams from 1977.
In the early 1980s she started a solo career with great success. She continued to participate in Fleetwood Mac projects until 1990. However, drug problems and coping with them later made her leave the music scene for a few years. In 1986, Nicks went to the Betty Ford Center for treatment for her cocaine addiction . After that, she was dependent on the tranquilizer Klonopin , who had been prescribed for her by a psychiatrist , for eight years . This dependency was cured in 1994 through a 47-day stay in hospital. Nicks actually never wanted to appear in public again, but in 1997 the band successfully reunited. In addition, Nicks performed regularly with the Dixie Chicks and Sheryl Crow , who also produced and wrote songs for Nicks' album Trouble in Shangri-La . She also worked with Don Henley of the Eagles , Tom Petty and John Stewart , among others . In the third and eighth seasons of American Horror Story , she made several guest appearances as herself in the form of a singing witch.
In 2015, Rolling Stone listed Nicks as one of the few women on rank 53 of the 100 best songwriters of all time .
In 2016 and 2017, Nicks was on tour with the Pretenders .
