Lana Del Rey (* 21st June 1985 in New York as Elizabeth Woolridge Grant ) is an American singer , songwriter and record producer. She became known with the song Video Games , with which she had her international breakthrough in December 2011. Her second studio album Born to Die was one of the best-selling albums of 2012.

Early years

Lana Del Rey was born Elizabeth Woolridge Grant in New York and grew up in Lake Placid , New York . From the age of 18, she worked as a social worker in New York homeless shelters and in rehabilitation centers for alcoholics and other drug addicts . She now lives mostly in California . She is under contract with the record company Universal .

From August 2011 to June 2014 she was in a relationship with the Scottish singer Barrie-James O'Neill from the band Kassidy . She was in a relationship with the Italian photographer Francesco Carrozzini until November 2015 .

Musical career

2003–2010: start of career

She began her musical career at the age of 17. She initially performed under several pseudonyms with guitar or small ensemble in smaller clubs in Brooklyn and on the Lower East Side . Between 2005 and 2006 she recorded the album Sirens under the pseudonym May Jailer , which went public in May 2012. In 2010 she released the album Lana Del Ray aka Lizzy Grant under the name Lizzy Grant .

She chose her stage name after the place Delray Beach in Florida . Her boyfriend from that time was from there and she was often in Miami and in contact with Cuban friends:

“I wanted a name I could shape the music towards […]. I was going to Miami quite a lot at the time, speaking a lot of Spanish with my friends from Cuba - Lana Del Rey reminded us of the glamor of the seaside. It sounded gorgeous coming off the tip of the tongue. "

2011–2013: Musical breakthrough with Born to Die

Before her breakthrough, she went on tour with Mando Diao . She was involved in the recording of the MTV unplugged album Above and Beyond , which was released in November 2010.

The following year she published her title Video Games . On YouTube it reached over a million views within a month. The video has now been viewed more than 229 million times (as of April 27, 2020). In addition, the song reached number one in the German single charts . Lana Del Rey had her first appearances in front of a German audience in the episode of the ARD program Inas Nacht broadcast on November 12, 2011, as well as at two sold-out concerts, also on November 12, 2011 in Cologne and November 14, 2011 in Berlin . In France , Austria and Switzerland the song came in second place, in many countries it received gold and platinum awards .

The album Born to Die was released on January 27, 2012. It reached number one in the charts in Germany , Austria , Switzerland and Great Britain and number two in the United States. The video for the single of the same name was published in December of the previous year.

The third single was the song Summertime Sadness on June 22, 2012 in Germany . He reached the top 5 in Germany and Switzerland. A publication in the USA or Great Britain was not planned. In these countries National Anthem was released as a single for it.

The album was re-released on November 16, 2012 under the name Born to Die - The Paradise Edition , which includes eight new songs. As part of an H & M - Campaign published Lana Del Rey advance the song Blue Velvet , a cover of the song by Bobby Vinton . The single was released on September 20, 2012 and placed in the charts, including in Great Britain. The first single from the new edition was the song Ride , which was released on September 25th. The song Burning Desire was made available for download. Another single, Dark Paradise, was released on March 1, 2013. The song Young & Beautiful , part of the soundtrack to the film The Great Gatsby , was released on April 23, 2013, with the accompanying video the day before. In the US, this is Del Rey's most successful single after video games . It reached number 22 on the Billboard Hot 100 . The album Born to Die sold more than five million copies and was in fifth place of the best selling albums of the year 2012th

From April to September 2013 she was on a major European tour. The Paradise Tour for Europe started on April 3rd in Amnéville ( France ) and ended on September 20th, 2013 in Istanbul . During the tour she also performed in Berlin, Düsseldorf, Vienna, Frankfurt and Munich at the end of April 2013. In November 2013, she completed the Paradise Tour with performances in Latin America.

2014–2015: Ultraviolence and Honeymoon

She started working on a new studio album in February 2013. According to his own statement, this should be “somewhat reduced”, but still “cinematic and dark”.

On December 5, 2013, Lana Del Rey released the short film Tropico . At the premiere, she confirmed the title of the new album, which is called Ultraviolence . The first single West Coast was released on April 14, 2014, the second single Shades of Cool was released on May 26, 2014.

She covered the song Once Upon a Dream for the film Maleficent - The Dark Fairy .

The third single Ultraviolence followed on June 6, 2014. The album was released on June 13, 2014. On June 17, 2014 followed the so far last single Brooklyn Baby .

Lana Del Rey contributed the songs I Can Fly and Big Eyes for the film Big Eyes . Big Eyes earned her a nomination for Best Movie Song at the 2015 Golden Globe Awards .

In late 2014, Lana Del Rey announced that they were working on a new album. At concerts on her tour, she announced that this would be released in September 2015 and would be called Honeymoon . In 2015 she created an Instagram account for her new album, on which she temporarily showed pictures and small recordings of the first single of the same name before it was released. The song was released on July 14, 2015. The second single, High by the Beach, was released on August 10, 2015. After the video premiered, Lana Del Rey confirmed that the album would be released on September 18, 2015. According to Lana Del Rey, her latest studio album should stylistically go more towards the second album Born to Die than towards the third album Ultraviolence .

2017: Lust for Life

On February 18, 2017, the single, previously unofficially announced as Love , was first released by fans by Lana Del Rey. The accompanying video was produced by Rich Lee. With Lust for Life , the second single from the album of the same name was released on April 19, 2017. It is a joint single release with The Weeknd . Another song was released on May 14, 2017, Coachella - Woodstock in My Mind . On May 25, 2017, Lana Del Rey announced on Twitter that Lust for Life would be released on July 21, 2017. Before that, two more singles were released with Groupie Love and Summer Bummer . On September 14, 2017, the last single White Mustang was released.

Since 2018: Norman Fucking Rockwell

With Mariners Apartment Complex , the first single from Del Rey's upcoming sixth studio album was released on September 12 2018th Four days later the next single came out with Venice Bitch . On January 9, 2019, Hope Is a Dangerous Thing for a Woman like Me to Have - but I Have It, the third advance single from the upcoming studio album, was released. Lana Del Rey stated that this new album will be called Norman Fucking Rockwell . On May 17, 2019, Del Rey released a cover version of Sublimes Doin 'Time . On the day of the release, a documentary about the band also premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival . The single reached number 74 on the Swiss charts and became Del Rey's 17th chart success as a performer in Switzerland. In the UK, the cover hit number 75 and became Del Rey's 22nd chart hit in the UK. On August 22, 2019, two more singles were released with Fuck It, I Love You and The Greatest before the album was released on August 29, 2019. On September 13, 2019, Del Rey released the single Don't Call Me Angel together with Miley Cyrus and Ariana Grande . This is the official soundtrack for Charlie's Angels .

At the end of 2019, she was the 130th most-heard artist worldwide on Spotify, with 18,614,067 monthly listeners.
