Norman Fucking Rockwell -

Norman Fucking Rockwell (alternatively NFR! ) Is the sixth studio album by US pop singer Lana Del Rey .

Creation and artwork

All compositions and lyrics on Norman Fucking Rockwell come from Del Rey himself, with the exception of a cover recording, who wrote or composed it with co-authors. Most of the titles were created with the help of Jack Antonoff , who co-wrote and composed a total of eleven titles. Bradley Nowell and Rick Nowels were each involved in three author participations. In addition, other isolated authors appear, including well-known musicians such as George Gershwin , Ira Gershwin and Adam Yauch . Del Rey and Antonoff were also responsible for most of the production, so Del Rey is involved in twelve and Antonoff in eleven productions. Del Rey's longtime companion Nowels participated in two productions. In addition, other isolated producers appear. Mastering was done by Sterling Sound, under the direction of Chris Gehringer and his assistant Will Quinnell. Norman Fucking Rockwell was mixed through the collaboration of Antonoff and Laura Sisk. Both were also responsible for most of the recordings. Antonoff also recorded most of the instruments for the album and was responsible for the programming. Recording and production took place at 13 locations, including the Electric Lady Studios in New York City, founded by Jimi Hendrix .

On the cover of the album, Del Rey can be seen posing on a sailing boat with Duke Nicholson . Duke Nicholson is a grandson of Jack Nicholson . As seen from the viewer, the album title is positioned in the top left corner in comic style. The photo is of Del Rey's younger sister, Caroline “Chuck” Grant, and was first presented by Del Rey on July 31, 2019.

Two days after the cover presentation, the distributor Urban Outfitters announced an alternative cover for the upcoming LP. This shows Del Rey with three of her friends on a stone wall. The photograph is also from her younger sister.

Publication and promotion

The first publication of Norman Rockwell Fucking carried worldwide on August 30, 2019 Interscope Records and Polydor . The album consists of 14 new studio recordings and is available on CD, download, MC and double LP. In Europe, an “Exclusive Poster Edition” of the album was released at the same time. This version is limited and includes a Del Reys poster as bonus content.

Del Rey first mentioned in an interview with Pitchfork Media in January 2018, on the sidelines of the Grammy Awards 2018 , that she had some new titles that had not yet been released. Among them is the "strange" piece called Bartender ("I've got a couple of other tracks. I've got this weird track called 'Bartender' that doesn't belong to a record yet."), A title that ultimately does it made it onto the album. During the year, Del Rey shared several song clips on her various social media channels , including Happiness Is a Butterfly (March 30, 2018), How to Disappear (October 5, 2018) and Cinnamon Girl (October 12, 2018). She first performed at the Brooklyn Academy of Music on October 29, 2018 with the title How to Disappear .

In June 2019, Del Rey announced during a concert in Ireland that the album would be released in August 2019. To kick off the promo phase, Del Rey published an “album trailer” on her YouTube channel on August 1, 2019. This three-minute video includes the tracks Doin 'Time , Mariners Apartment Complex , Venice Bitch and the title track .

background information

Del Rey first presented the album title at the premiere of her single Venice Bitch on Zane Lowe's radio show World Record on Beats 1 in September 2018. During this interview, she also revealed that the album was almost complete and that she had recorded eleven tracks. In the end, 14 tracks make it onto the album.

The album is named after the American painter and illustrator Norman Rockwell . Rockwell's genre images from everyday American life, distributed in magazines, were extremely popular, but were viewed as kitsch by art critics . Del Rey saw here a connection to her producer Antonoff, who, like the misunderstood artist, was always driven by self-doubt and did not believe in his talent.

content

All the lyrics on the album are in English and are written by Del Rey, who wrote the pieces with changing co-authors. With one exception, the remaining songs are new compositions. The track Doin 'Time is a cover version of the original by the US rock band Sublime , which in turn is a remake of the original by Summertime ( aria from the opera Porgy and Bess ) from 1935. Musically, the songs move in the realm of psychedelic rock . In terms of content, her texts deal with topics such as America , feminism , politics , sex , dancing or her late youth as an alcoholic. For each of her songs she was accompanied by various instrumentalists (see contributors).

Single releases

Del Rey released six official singles prior to Norman Fucking Rockwell's release . The first single was Mariners Apartment Complex , which was released almost a year before the album was released on September 12, 2018. At the same time as the single, the accompanying music video, directed by Del Rey's younger sister Caroline “Chuck” Grant, was released . The single celebrated chart successes in Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Only six days later, Venice Bitch, the second single was released on September 18, 2018, but it did not achieve any commercial success. For this purpose, a music video was also produced under the direction of Chuck Grant. On January 9, 2019, Hope Is a Dangerous Thing for a Woman like Me to Have - but I Have It was the third single. This made it into the British single charts, but only for one week at position 99. With Doin 'Time , the fourth single was released on May 17, 2019, with this Del Rey was able to build on the success of Mariners Apartment Complex and also reached chart listings in the Switzerland and the United Kingdom as well as the United States. The accompanying music video only celebrated its premiere on the day the album was released, August 30, 2019. One week before the album was released , singles five and six appeared simultaneously with Fuck It, I Love You and The Greatest on August 22, 2019. A joint music video was shot for both singles. While The Greatest missed the charts, Fuck It, I Love You made it into the UK singles charts.

Reviews

Rinko Heidrich from the German-language online magazine laut.de awarded four out of five stars to Norman Fucking Rockwell . He described the title Venice Bitch as a radio-unfriendly “ten-minute monster”, which makes a clear statement for art and against appropriation. That is the art pop that Lady Gaga always promised but never delivered. Hope Is a Dangerous Thing for a Woman like Me to Have - but I Have It is a brief, bright moment in the darkness of the album, breathed into the microphone as intimate and as spartan as it gets on the piano. In general there would be a "strange calm" about the album. He described quotes like "Oh, be my once in a lifetime" or "Lying on your chest in my party dress" in Love Song as not really strong feminist statements, but to imagine how you get into a car with your partner and everyone Worry disappears, just be beautiful wishful thinking. Love in all its facets is Del Rey's leitmotif , the recurring lifeline, or, as in How to Disappear, the danger of getting lost in toxic relationships. The reinterpretation of Doin 'Time doesn't have much in common with the original. The reggae-influenced original is deprived of all happiness and broken down to slowcore . In the cosmos of the Californian end-time interpreter, the much-cited “Summertime” is not a redemption, but a longing that always seems distant. Del Rey's themes between love, beach and sadness may seem repetitive, but actually they are summed up as the great American tale, a monumental series about the soul of America, past and present. Norman Fucking Rockwell is the densest and most stringent chapter so far in her "serialized novel". Antonoff is doing a “very good job” and subtly incorporating new elements such as trip-hop- like beats or reverb effects into the well-known Dream Pop .

Tobi Müller from Spiegel Online described Del Rey on Norman Fucking Rockwell as timeless as never before. With the album, Del Rey shows a new self-image as a poet . The titles would possibly become a bit too long and the instrumentation suffer a bit as a result. In titles like Venice Bitch , Müller sees parallels to German Krautrock . Your texts would stage a turn towards a shirt-sleeved feminism.

Jochen Overbeck from Musikexpress awarded the album five out of six stars. At Norman Fucking Rockwell , contemporary pop megalomania meets moods that seem to have been imported from the “Golden Age of Pop”. In addition, there would be a good dose of the sweet poison that has so far characterized all of their records; a viscous syrup , made from the sand of the Pacific coast , some stiff drinks and a diffuse, sexually charged "Hollywood Hills feeling". The sound doesn't necessarily lighten up the darkness of their previous work, but makes it different to experience. Above all, he protects the gloomy moments from drifting into "melancholy soups" by repeatedly letting in a small beam of light, turning the instrumentation until branches reach out of the ground, which one can trip over. Where the “Del Rey feeling” previously seemed to have been located in the 1940s, the 1960s sometimes shine through. Norman Fucking Rockwell was named "Album of the Week".

Stephan Müller for Plattentests.de rated Norman Fucking Rockwell with eight out of ten points. The album has the inner stringency of the "sultry" honeymoon and the electric guitars from the ultraviolence phase. The big gain here is Antonoff. He takes Del Rey's skills to a new level by giving her even more space and playing around with guitars, drums and various keyboard instruments. A wonderful atmosphere "unfolds" here. Packed with reminiscences of the free and artistic side of the 1960s, with references to poets , writers and painters , Del Rey's interpersonal constructs have never before been staged so brilliantly on the border fence between reality , nostalgia and fantasy . A is a barefoot, elegant spectacle for the here and now as well as a spectacle of soft tones. Müller highlighted the titles Cinnamon Girl , The Greatest , Hope Is a Dangerous Thing for a Woman like Me to Have - but I Have It , Mariners Apartment Complex and Venice Bitch .
