Interscope Records

Interscope Records is an American music label . Today it is a sub-label of the Universal Music Group (which is in turn a subsidiary of Vivendi , formerly Vivendi Universal). Interscope is part of Universal's Interscope-Geffen-A&M-Record label group. Company founder and President Jimmy Iovine left Interscope in May 2014. John Janick took over as CEO .

Company history

Interscope Records was founded in 1989 by Jimmy Iovine . Two years later, in 1991, the Warner Music Group bought 50% of Interscope Records to control the sale and marketing of the music label . A year later, the gangsta rap label Death Row Records was added. As the first artist, Dr. Dre presented his first song on the Gangsta Rap label.

The biggest financial success for the label was the sale of Snoop Dogg's debut album Doggystyle in 1993, which was however topped by the sale of 50 Cents debut album Get Rich Or Die Tryin '10 years later.

1995 MCA Music Entertainment (predecessor of the Universal Music Group) bought Interscope Records completely. Polygram joined Interscope a year later . In 1997 Interscope separated from the successful Death Row Records label. In 1998 Polygram renamed itself Universal Music Records. In late 2007, Interscope merged with Geffen Records . CEO Jimmy Iovine left Interscope in May 2014 to work for Apple . John Janick was his successor.
