Jimmy (James) Iovine (born March 11, 1953 in Brooklyn , USA ) is an Italian-American music producer and entrepreneur.

Life

Iovine began his career in 1973 as a sound engineer at the New York record plant . He had his first commercial success in 1978 as the producer of the Patti Smith album Easter , whose song Because the Night entered the Top 40. He has worked as a producer for U2 ( Rattle & Hum ), Tom Petty , The Wallflowers , Stevie Nicks and Dire Straits , among others .

In 1989 Iovine founded the Interscope Records label , half of which was sold to Warner Music Group in 1991 . Iovine was president of the label from 1989 to 2014 and kept the position after the merger of Interscope with Geffen Records and A&M Records to Interscope-Geffen-A & M under the umbrella of the Universal Music Group .

Iovine founded together with Suge Knight and Dr. Dre founded the gangster rap -oriented sub-label Death Row Records and later together with Dr. Dre Aftermath Entertainment . He is considered a co-discoverer of Eminem because one of his interns at the time saw the rapper at a freestyle competition and asked for a demo tape, which was sent to Iovine and Dr. Dre was forwarded.

Iovine was on the board of directors of the 2006 run by him and Dr. Dre founded Beats Electronics , which is mainly used for its Beats by Dr. Dre is known. Beats Electronics was sold to Apple Inc. in May 2014 for $ 3 billion . Iovine has an undisclosed position there, supporting the company in Apple Music .
