Eminem (* 17th October 1972 as Marshall Bruce Mathers III in St. Joseph , Missouri ), also known as Slim Shady , is an American rapper , singer , songwriter , producer and actor . The name Eminem results from the pronunciation of his initials "M & M" and is also written EMINƎM .

He is a Grammy and Oscar winner and, according to Billboard magazine, the most successful musician of the 2000s in the United States. His albums The Eminem Show are the third and The Marshall Mathers LP the seventh best-selling album of the decade in the USA. According to record awards, he has sold over 249 million records worldwide in his career , making him one of the most successful individual interpreters of all time .

In 2011 the music magazine Rolling Stone called him the "King of Hip-Hop". The rapper is the owner of the music label Shady Records and a member of the hip-hop formations D12 and Bad Meets Evil .

Life

Childhood and youth

Eminem was born in 1972 as Marshall Bruce Mathers III in St. Joseph in the US state of Missouri , where he also spent the first years of his life. His parents Marshall Bruce Mathers II and Deborah "Debbie" Briggs married in 1972. However, the father left the family when Eminem was three months old. According to Eminem, his mother, who was only 17 at birth, was a drug addict, violent and also suffered (mentioned in the songs Cleanin 'Out My Closet , My Mom and Baby ) from Munchausen Deputy Syndrome , a form of child abuse that causes mothers to suffer from illness invent and pretend your child. The family moved often, which resulted in the young Marshall Mathers changing schools several times. This has been called "the new" often victims of bullying at school - early 1982 was Marshall after a particularly savage beating attack of a fellow student for five days with cerebral hemorrhage in coma . He also suffered temporary loss of vision and hearing. Deborah Mathers sued the school, but the case was dropped a year later. At the age of 12, Mathers and his mother moved to Warren , a crime-ridden suburb of Detroit , Michigan . Here he spent his youth as a white man in an area predominantly inhabited by Afro-Americans .

Eminem's half-uncle Ronald "Ronnie" Polkinghorn, who was only a few months older than Eminem, got him excited about rap. Especially the Beastie Boys and NWA . became his musical role models. Under the pseudonym "M & M" Mathers began rapping himself at the age of 14 and often took part in freestyle battles at Osborn High School. There he was able to make a name for himself as an underground rapper. At the age of 15 he met his future wife Kimberly Ann Scott, called Kim, know. After repeating ninth grade twice due to poor grades and absenteeism, Eminem dropped out at the age of 17. After high school , he made a living doing a variety of temporary jobs and moved frequently, mostly because he couldn't pay the rent.

In 1991 Mathers' uncle Ronnie Polkinghorn shot himself with a sawed-off shotgun . This tragic incident had a big impact on Eminem, as his uncle had been a role model, father substitute and friend for him.

1992–1998: First experiences

In 1992 Marshall Mathers was signed to the Detroit label FBT Productions by the brothers Mark and Jeff Bass and joined the rap crew "Bassmint Productions" (consisting of Proof , Chaos Kid, Manics, DJ Buttafingas and M & M). The group later renamed themselves "Soul Intent" and released their first single "Fuckin 'Backstabber" in 1995 on Mashin' Duck Records .

In 1995, Eminem gave up his stage name "M & M", which had been used until then, in order to avoid legal problems with Mars Inc. , the manufacturer of the candy M & M’s , and called himself Eminem. On December 25, 1995, Mathers' and Scott's daughter Hailie Jade was born. The couple also adopted Scott's niece Alaina after her parents were killed in an accident.

In 1996 he met his future manager Paul Rosenberg , a former rapper and aspiring lawyer. In the same year he recorded his debut album Infinite with FBT Productions , which was released in an edition of a thousand cassettes and 100 vinyl records and was mostly used by Eminem as a demo to introduce itself to publishers. Infinite did not attract particular attention from buyers , only 250 units were sold.

Eminem performing with Proof in Munich (1999)

In 1996, the rapper Proof founded a loose collective of six rappers, to which Eminem joined after the violent death of a member. Proof suggested that each participant should create an alter ego in order to create their own hardcore style carefree behind its mask. Since the original six rappers became twelve in the figurative sense, he called the connection D12 , Dirty Dozen (English for Dirty Dozen). Eminem then created the character "Slim Shady" and recorded the Slim Shady EP .

In 1997 Eminem took second place at the Rap Olympics and won the Freestyle Performer of the Year Award. This is how Jimmy Iovine , CEO of Interscope Records , became aware of the Detroit rapper and played producer Dr. Dre presented a copy of the Slim Shady EP . He then signed Eminem and produced the album The Slim Shady LP with him from the Slim Shady EP .

1999–2005: Commercial success

Logo until 2012

The Slim Shady LP was released in February 1999 and reached number 2 on the American Billboard charts . The album received four platinum awards on November 14, 2000 for more than four million units sold in the United States . With the rise in popularity, controversial debates about the rapper's lyrics began. In the song '97 Bonnie and Clyde , for example, he describes how he drives his daughter to the beach to get rid of her mother's body, while the song Guilty Conscience ends with Eminem persuading a man to shoot his wife and her lover . Eminem appears in this song as a lyrical self , which forms the antagonist to the guilty conscience of the people. Dr. Dre his voice and exhorts people to act rationally and prudently.

On 17 September 1999 Deborah Mathers sued her son on 10 million US dollars for pain and suffering because he in several interviews as "unstable, law suit-happy drug user" ( "labile, for libel, the process had called joyful drug addicts"). The lawsuit was dropped after an agreement was reached on a $ 10,000 payment.

In May 2000 the album The Marshall Mathers LP was released, on which Eminem mainly dealt with his rise to star and the associated influence on society and youth. In addition to more serious songs like the single Stan , which reached the top of the charts in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Great Britain, there were again very controversial songs on this album. One line from the song I'm Back reads : "I take seven (kids) from ( Columbine ), stood 'em all in line" and the lyrics of the song Kim are a fictional dialogue, at the end of which Eminem left his ex-wife kill.

In August 2000, Eminem was sentenced to two years probation for illicit gun possession after the rapper pulled an unloaded gun and hit the man hospital-ready during an argument with his wife's lover. The marriage of Scotts and Mathers on June 14, 1999 was divorced on October 11, 2001 after Scott attempted suicide. At the same time, Kimberly Scott sued him for $ 10 million in pain and suffering and child custody for defamation after Eminem defamed her on multiple appearances.

In 2001, D'Angelo Bailey, a former classmate of Mathers', sued the rapper for $ 1 million. Eminem called him in 1999 in a song called Brain Damage as a "fat kid" who bullied and beaten him several times. Bailey felt that the song portrayed him in a wrong light and asked for damages. The judge rejected the lawsuit - her justification, the song above the events recognizably fictional, she announced in rap form.

In May 2002, Eminem's fourth studio album, The Eminem Show, was released . This album was also the first release by the music label Shady Records , which was founded in 1999 by Eminem and his manager Paul Rosenberg. The main difference between the album and its predecessors is that the lyrics are less aggressive. Although controversial topics such as racism, criticism of the US government, terrorism and contempt for women continue to be dealt with, the abandonment of horrorcore rap and Eminem's serious and personal approach to presentation give the album a somewhat softer tone. Only the first single Without Me stuck to the tradition of mocking other celebrities. That same year, Eminem played the lead role in the semi-autobiographical film 8 Mile . In it he played a white rapper named Rabbit. For its cinema debut, Eminem received mostly positive reviews and even won an Oscar for Lose Yourself for best original song . The song also won the Grammy Award for Best Rap Song and the Grammy Award for Best Male Rap Solo Performance , and was nominated for Record of the Year and Song of the Year categories.

In 2003 Mathers also took on custody of Kimberly's second daughter Whitney, whose biological father he is not. Eminem received three awards at the Grammy Awards. But the downside of his success was not long in coming: Mathers, who was under the influence of drugs at most of his concerts, became dependent on Vicodin , Valium and Ambien . At first, however, the rapper denied rumors about his addiction.

In November 2004 the follow-up album Encore was released . In the course of 2004 there had already been rumors that Eminem only wanted to make one album and then retire from the music business. The rapper did not comment on this and even kept a low profile during the album presentation. Encore continued Eminem's departure from horrorcore rap and featured many serious tracks. Mathers criticized the politics of George W. Bush , processed various beefs and dedicated the song Mockingbird to his daughter. However, this album also contained some controversial songs. Eminem makes fun of Michael Jackson and his child abuse trial several times in Just Lose It . A week after the single was released, Jackson voiced his displeasure with the song on a radio show, and Stevie Wonder described the music video as "hitting a man while he's down." As a result, some American TV stations decided not to play the video.

In August 2005, Eminem had to cancel the "Anger Management" tour due to exhaustion and went into therapy because of his drug addiction. However, this was unsuccessful.

2006–2008: Musical break

On December 2, 2005, the best-of album Curtain Call: The Hits was released . According to Eminem, it should be "the end of a period of [his] career" and also the end of his alter ego Slim Shady . On January 14, 2006, Mathers and Scott were married for the second time, but divorce was filed again on April 6 of the same year. On April 11, 2006, Proof , best man and close friend of Eminem, was shot dead in a shooting outside a Detroit nightclub. These blows of fate made Mathers' drug and alcohol problems worse.

In December 2006, the sampler Eminem Presents: The Re-Up was released , on which all artists under contract to Shady Records were represented.

From mid-2007 , rumors of a new Eminem album began to circulate based on statements from other rappers on his Shady Records label . Jeff Bass worked with Eminem on more than 25 tracks, but none of them ultimately found their way onto the record. During this period, the rapper also suffered from writer's block.

At the end of 2007 Mathers came to the hospital after taking a methadone overdose and started a rehab against his opioid addiction , which this time ended successfully. According to his own statement, Eminem has been clean since April 20, 2008. From September 2008, Eminem and Dr. Dre recorded new songs in Florida and completed the new album within the next few months.

2009 to today: continued

Eminem at a gig (2014)

It wasn't until May 2009 that Eminem's next studio album, Relapse, was released . The main themes of the album are his overcome pill addiction and his withdrawal therapy, but he also alluded to his four-year absence from the public. Contrary to his announcement in 2005, he let his alter ego Slim Shady "resurrect" in some songs in which he puts himself in the role of a serial killer.

To bridge the time until the release of another album, a re-release of Relapse was released in December 2009 under the name Relapse: Refill with seven additional songs. In June 2010, Eminem's seventh solo album, Recovery , was released, which was originally announced for the end of 2009 under the name Relapse 2 . On Recovery you can find collaborations with well-known music greats such as Rihanna , Pink or Lil Wayne - a clear break from previous albums, on which only artists closely related to Eminem could be heard. It is noteworthy that Eminem distances himself from his earlier albums Encore and Relapse on this album , as he was under the influence of drugs or was in therapy when recording these albums. Recovery was able to seamlessly build on the success of previous releases, reached number one on the charts in many countries and brought the rapper several Grammy nominations. The first two singles Not Afraid and Love the Way You Lie were also extremely successful and sold millions of times.

In July 2010 Eminem appeared for the first time in five years at major festivals, including the well-known Openair Frauenfeld . These performances, known as The Recovery Tour , were also the first in his career where he was sober and clean.

On June 13, 2011 the EP Hell: The Sequel was released , which Eminem recorded together with his friend and rapper Royce da 5'9 ″ .

In May 2012, Eminem announced that they were working on his eighth solo album, the first song of which was released on August 14, 2013, Survival , which is also included on the soundtrack of the video game Call of Duty: Ghosts . At the MTV Video Music Awards on August 25, 2013, Eminem's eighth studio album The Marshall Mathers LP 2 was announced for November 5, 2013. The first single Berzerk was released on August 27th. After the album's tracklist and a video for Survival had been published in early October, another single, Rap God , was released on October 15 . On October 29, 2013, the song The Monster , in which Eminem works again with the singer Rihanna , was released as a fourth single. The album was able to build on the commercial success of Recoverys and rose to the top of the charts in over ten countries - including Germany, USA and Great Britain.

When the house in which Eminem grew up was demolished in 2013, he secured 700 bricks from the building's foundations for an unusual merchandising item: each packed in a glass case with a certificate of authenticity personally signed by Eminem and the accompanying album The Marshall Mathers LP the hip-hop star offered these 700 stones for sale to the public. Both the cover of the album The Marshall Mathers LP from 2000 and the cover of the follow-up album The Marshall Mathers LP 2 from 2013 depict the childhood home of Eminem.

In the following three years, Eminem appeared primarily as a feature guest and producer - he acted as executive producer on the albums of Skylar Gray ( Don't Look Down ) and Yelawolf ( Love Story ) . He was responsible for the soundtrack for the film Southpaw , in which he should have played the lead role in the meantime . 2014 he presented with his manager Paul Rosenberg and the group Slaughterhouse the live battle rap format Total Slaughter . The main event took place on July 12th in New York's Hammerstein Ballroom after a four-episode Road to Total Slaughter video series had been produced in cooperation with the music website WatchLOUD .

In the same year, Eminem was represented on the compilation album Shady XV of his label, which was released on the occasion of the 15th anniversary of The Slim Shady LP . It contains songs by all artists under contract to Shady Records at the time and was released on November 24, 2014. In an 18-minute promo video published on November 10th - an a cappella - Cypher recorded in the respective hometowns of Yelawolf, the Slaughterhouse artists and Eminem  - he raps a battle-heavy arrangement of freestyle and text for almost seven minutes without editing .

He chose the same form of promotion again in October 2016 when he released the seven-minute free track Campaign Speech - recorded as a one-take, accompanied by minimal instrumentation - and announced that he would work on a new album.

At the BET Hip Hop Awards 2017, another a cappella performance by Eminem entitled "The Storm" was broadcast in which he attacks the incumbent US President Donald Trump . In it he attacked Trump's handling of crisis situations such as the hurricane disasters in Puerto Rico and the mass murder in Las Vegas and accused him of trying to distract him from real problems with Twitter arguments over protests against racism in the National Football League portrayed as unpatriotic and racist and also vulgarly insulted. He also accused Trump of warmongering and compared his policy towards North Korea with a kamikaze aviator that could trigger a "nuclear holocaust".

On November 10, 2017 , the first single from his ninth studio album Revival , which was released on December 15, 2017, was the song Walk on Water , on which the singer Beyoncé can also be heard . Especially the single River , on which the British singer Ed Sheeran participated, reached high chart positions.

On August 31, 2018, Eminem released his tenth studio album Kamikaze, unannounced .

As in 2018, Eminem released his eleventh studio album, Music to Be Murdered By, on January 17th, 2020 .

Text content

Eminem backstage in Munich (1999)

His often aggressive lyrics are particularly popular with young listeners. Critics complain that the texts often contain exaggerated, surreal fantasies of violence. He portrays himself homophobic and misogynistic .

Through his utterances, Eminem verbalizes conflicts within American society as he sees it. Of LGBT people it is called a "homophobe" and commonly called "preachers of hate". He sees himself as an honest person who only says what goes through his head and expresses what others think but do not say. The question is much more, why are all these things in his head:

“My thing is this: If I'm sick enough to think it, then I'm sick enough to say it. Why are these thoughts in my head? A lot of people think a lot worse shit than I do. They just don't say it. "

- Eminem

He sees his homophobic texts as a result of his origins. If you call your opponent a "fagot" ( fagot ) on the street , you don't mean gay people as such , you just want to deny them their masculinity. This is how he learned this word and in this sense he also uses it:

“People just don't understand where I come from. 'Fagot' to me doesn't necessarily mean gay people. 'Fagot' to me just means ... taking away your manhood. You're a sissy. You're a coward. [...] That's how I learned the word. Battling with somebody, you do anything you can to strip their manhood away. "

- Eminem

In October 2010, Eminem first issued a direct public statement on his attitudes towards homosexuals and when asked how he would react to the introduction of "gay marriage " in Michigan:

“I think if two people love each other, then what the hell? I think that everyone should have the chance to be equally miserable, if they want. "

“When two people love each other, I think to myself: what's the problem? I think everyone should have the chance to be equally unhappy if they want to. "

- Eminem

Eminem sees himself as someone who ironically exaggerates the "stereotypical rapper behavior" with his lyrics and wants to see his other lyrics interpreted as follows: "Do not take drugs, do not have unprotected sexual intercourse, do not be violent - leave that to me!"

The main themes of his lyrics revolve around the processing of his childhood and adolescence (e.g. Cleanin 'Out My Closet ) as well as his failed marriage with Kimberly Scott. On the Marshall Mathers LP there is the title Kim , on which a quarrel between Eminem and his then wife is implemented like a radio play . In the course of this argument, Eminem dragged his wife into a car. When she tries to run away towards the end of the song, he cuts her throat with the words “Bleed, bitch, bleed” (“Bleed, bitch, bleed”) and puts her in the trunk. Several times Eminem brought a sex doll on stage to represent Kimberly Scott. This doll was then berated and apparently raped by him to the applause of the audience.

In the song Mockingbird from the album Encore he sings of Lainie and Hailie, but Eminem also refers to his daughters in many other songs (e.g. Hailie's song , When I'm Gone , Going Through Changes ).

Reactions

Eminem was often subjected to severe criticism due to violent content, including calls for boycotts by politicians and parents' associations as well as demonstrations by gay and lesbian associations before concerts. After the Littleton School Massacre , Eminem's texts were blamed for the bloody act. In New Zealand the album The Marshall Mathers LP was only allowed to be sold to people over the age of 18. Lynne Cheney, wife of ex-US Vice President Richard Cheney , instigated a committee in the US Congress against inappropriate depictions of violence in popular music. However, this is not a rare case in the domestic political struggles within the USA, which are concerned about publicity. Tipper Gore , wife of the former US Vice President Al Gore , founded the Parents Music Resource Center in the 1980s , an organization against music with “explicit lyrics”, meaning certain metal and rap albums ). The committee achieved that stickers with the inscription “ Parental Advisory ” have to be affixed to corresponding records and CDs with such “clear content” . However, in contrast to the desired effect, the stickers turned out to be more of a sales aid. Because of this, z. B. released a defused version of the Eminem show without title 9, because the track Drips on the album is too hard according to some politicians.

The Rolling Stone chose Eminem ranked 83 of the 100 greatest players and ranked 91 of the 100 best songwriters of all time .

Conflict with Mariah Carey

Eminem has written several songs related to his alleged relationship with singer Mariah Carey . Carey denies having had a sexual relationship with the rapper, saying that they did something together on a number of occasions, but without anything intimate taking place. This episode runs through several songs by Eminem and Carey.

In the song Bagpipes from Baghdad from the album Relapse , Eminem denigrates Carey's relationship with her black husband Nick Cannon . Cannon then said that Eminem had exceeded the limit of what was tolerable, called him a "natural born racist in disguise" and asked him to meet with him. Eminem later described the lyrics of Bagpipes from Baghdad as harsh, was surprised by Nick Cannon's reaction and said he wished Cannon all the best. Nick Cannon also rowed back, saying that he only wanted to express his feelings about the song and not insult Eminem himself.

A few months after Bagpipes from Baghdad , Mariah Carey's song Obsessed was released. In this one she sings about a man who claims to have a relationship with her. Eminem released the song The Warning in response to the song . This contains answering machine messages, which Eminem says came from Carey himself when the two were together. At the same time, Eminem hinted that they had further evidence of their relationship. Neither Carey nor Cannon have yet issued an opinion on this song. In the special edition for the fifteenth anniversary of Vibe magazine , Eminem was raised again about the conflict, but stated that he had closed the matter and did not want to comment on it.
