The presenter and singer Ina Müller led through the gala for the first time. She was also nominated for the Echo as best national artist.

The 20th echo award of the German Phono Academy took place on March 24, 2011 in the Berlin Palais am Funkturm . The gala was moderated by Ina Müller and guest presenter Joko Winterscheidt and broadcast on the television station Das Erste . There were 25 categories at the Echo 2011. The “Radio Echo” category was new, for which online voting took place between February 14th and March 4th 2011. The category “Best National Act Abroad”, which had last existed in 2000, has been reinstated. The industry prizes for the media partner, the retail partner, the producer team, the social commitment and the music DVD production were already presented during a charity dinner organized by the Musik Hilft Foundation on March 23, 2011.

Lena presented Taken by a Stranger , the German entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2011 . In addition, she was nominated for the Echo in five categories, from which she received the awards of Most Successful Newcomer National and Most Successful Artist National .
The Hawaiian singer Bruno Mars presented his single Grenade . He was also nominated for the Echo as the most successful international newcomer
British singer Adele sang her number 1 hit Rolling in the Deep . She was also nominated for the Echo as the most successful international artist
