song

Almost all of the harmonies are taken from the piece Comptine d'un autre été by Yann Tiersen , known from the soundtrack of the film The fabulous world of Amélie . As is typical for the band, the entire lyrics are in German. In addition to the band, the Sankt Stephan youth choir from Cologne and the Lucky Kids children's choir also perform . In Born to live is to a certain extent to the subsequent title published in 2008 single by your side .

The singer Der Graf told the newspaper Bild about the background of the song: "The death of my friend struck me deeply and inspired me to write this song for him." This should be made clear by lines of text like "I see a meaning since you are no longer because you showed me how valuable my life is". In the newspaper interview he said, “I didn't know how much the text should affect others who have lost loved ones. The response was overwhelming. In principle, I owe this success to my deceased friend. Because without the terrible tragedy of his early death, the song would not have existed like this. "

reception

In 2018 the band received five-fold gold for 750,000 units of the single sold in Germany and a platinum record for 30,000 units sold in Switzerland in 2011. The music magazine laut.de wrote about the chart success that it was "only a big surprise for the very unsuspecting". Rather, it was mapped out by the marketing by the major label Universal and by an enormous amount of advertising: “In addition to a documentary on RTL II , lots of interviews, cinema spots, site fence placements, the label also went to extremes on the Internet” and thus spoke mainly so-called “ Target group Goths ”. The song is also considered a “typical German crypt ballad including a light marching rhythm and a catchy children's choir in the chorus ”.

Annika Rinsche emphasized the great success of the song at funerals, but criticized its arbitrariness: "'Born to live' has been a long-running hit at funerals for months and is also excellent and universal for mourning broken relationships, broken friendships or euthanized pets. Lines like 'Born to live, for the one moment when each of us felt how valuable life is' are just so deep that the fans can relieve them of consternation and thoughtfulness without being overwhelmed by complexity ”. On May 27, 2011, the song was awarded a Comet in the Best Song category.

Between February 12, 2010 and November 25, 2011, Born to Live was listed in the German single charts for 94 consecutive weeks . It was so far the longest uninterrupted placed German-language titles, only the single Heavy Cross by Gossip could longer without a break in the charts with.
