Gossip ( English gossip ; formerly The Gossip ) is a three-piece band from Arkansas and Washington , which makes a mixture of disco and rock music . It was founded in 1999 in Olympia . The band members now live in Portland . The trio was disbanded in 2016, but in mid-March 2019 Beth Ditto announced a comeback on her Instagram account.

The group was influenced by the riot grrrl movement from Olympia (Washington) and feminism .

history

Foundation and first publications

Beth Ditto , Nathan Howdeshell aka Brace Paine, and Kathy Mendonca grew up together in Searcy , Arkansas, and moved to the Olympics in 1999 . All three played in local bands before; Ditto was the singer with Little Miss Muffet, Howdeshell played with Mrs. Garrett and the Space Kadetts / Boy Pussy USA and Mendonca with PooPoo Icee. In Olympia they formed The Gossip on a whim and played at several concerts. They came into contact with the local riot grrrl movement and released their debut EP The Gossip in 1999 on the independent label K Records . You were hired as the opening group for a tour by Sleater-Kinney . Many of the songs played live here are then released on their debut album That's Not What I Heard on the independent label Kill Rock Stars .

Further concert tours will follow, including a. with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs , Le Tigre , Erase Errata , Jon Spencer Blues Explosion , Stereo Total , The White Stripes , Sonic Youth , Har Mar Superstar , Les Georges Leningrad and The Kills , on which the group was able to increase its fan base, and the release of the album Movement in May 2003 (now as Gossip ). In 2003 the band released their first live album Undead in NYC. Shortly afterwards, drummer Kathy Mendonca left the band to work as a midwife in the future. The group gained public attention during this time through the sometimes clear texts and their commitment against the re-election of George W. Bush .

The first release with the new drummer Hannah Blilie was the split EP Real Damage, produced together with the synth-pop artist Tracy + the Plastics , which was released in January 2005.

Standing in the Way of Control album

Hannah Blilie, 2008

After the departure of the drummer Kathy Mendonca and the inclusion of the new drummer Hannah Blilie, Gossip released her third album Standing in the Way of Control in 2006 for the first time in Europe on the German independent record label L'age d'or . This album was produced in Seattle by Guy Picciotto and Ryan Hadlock .

The theme song was written by Beth Ditto in response to the US government 's decision to deny gays and lesbians the right to marry . "Nobody in the States was amazed or shaken by Bush's decision, but everyone I know felt helpless and betrayed," says Beth. "I wrote the chorus to encourage people not to give up. It's a bad time for civil rights , but I think the only way to survive is to stick together and keep fighting. "

The album was a huge success , especially in the UK . In the same year, Beth Ditto was the winner of the NME Cool List published by the English music magazine New Musical Express (NME) ; she was the first woman to win on that list. The NME then asked Ditto to appear naked on the cover of the magazine the following year, which she agreed to do. The song became famous in 2007 through its use in advertising for the television series Skins on Channel 4 .

Music for Men album

In June 2009 the album Music for Men was released, which helped the band to achieve a commercial breakthrough in German-speaking countries. Supported by the media presence of Beth Ditto, the lead single Heavy Cross in particular became a long-running hit in the German single charts and was awarded triple gold by the Federal Association of the Music Industry . In September 2010 Heavy Cross was named as the "most successful internationally produced single" and broke another chart record in January 2011 when the single was listed in the German Top 100 for 82 consecutive weeks on January 14th. This record was previously held by Wolfgang Petry with The longest single in the world from 1996. With the 96 weeks of the chart (as of April 22, 2011), Heavy Cross ranks second on the long-running list. Only DJ Ötzi & Nik P. with a star (... that bears your name) (106 weeks) have ever been in the German single charts longer.

Album A Joyful Noise

On March 12, 2012, the first single Perfect World was released. The fifth album A Joyful Noise was released on May 11th. The album was produced by Mark Ronson and Brian Higgins ( Xenomania ). The second single Move in the Right Direction was released on May 23rd. A Joyful Noise reached number 1 in Switzerland and number 2 in the album charts in Germany.

Since 2016: dissolution, solo career and comeback

According to Pitchfork magazine, the band went their separate ways since 2016 because Beth Ditto wanted to focus more on her solo career and fashion creations. Her first concert in six years was announced for July 2019.

style

The band optics are particularly dominated by the front woman Beth Ditto, who confidently counteracts the popular ideal of beauty in pop music with her weight . At concerts she often strips down to her underwear. In addition, the fall Tomboy - look the tattooed Hannah Blilie and Queercore on -style Nathan Howdeshell.
