Le Tigre is an American feminist electropunk band consisting of members Kathleen Hanna, Johanna Fateman and JD Samson. Le Tigre are often described as the successors of the Riot Grrrl movement, of which band member Kathleen Hanna was one of the founders and leading figures and whose content they partially continued.

Band history

Actually, as a live backing band for Kathleen Hanna's solo project ( Julie Ruin thought), Le Tigre 1998 by ex was Bikini Kill -Frontfrau Kathleen Hanna, videographer Sadie Benning and DIY - Fanzine -Schreiberin Johanna Fateman established as an independent band. The music is a mixture of elements from punk rock and electronic music . The texts mostly convey feminist , queer or general political views.

In 1999 the first, self-titled album was released on the Mr. Lady Records label . One of their greatest hits so far, Deceptacon, comes from this album. In Hot Topic, also featured on the album, they pay tribute to dozens of influences, artists, and activists.

After the EP From the Desk of Mr. Lady was released , Sadie Bennings left the band to continue her film career. In their place came JD Samson.

The band members consider themselves performance artists and add multimedia and performance art elements to their live shows. Le Tigre try to implement their socio-political convictions in the band's internal structure as well: Every member takes on every function in principle and especially live, that is, there is no fixed role assignment, such as guitar, electric bass, vocals, drums in classic rock formations. While it used to be that Le Tigre only played concerts in front of a female ( lesbian and gay ) audience due to their feminist commitment , this subcultural aspect of their performances increasingly faded into the background as their popularity grew. However, this development did not detract from their quality as identification figures and role models.

Johanna Fateman, 2008

After the dissolution of the queer-feminist record label Mr. Lady Records, Le Tigre switched to the major label Universal Music . The album This Island , which was released there, was able to build on old successes in terms of sales, but was received by critics and fans in some cases ambiguous.

Although the band has been inactive since 2007, Kathleen Hanna emphasized that Le Tigre have by no means split up, and she also announced the release of a DVD for 2010.
