Mr. Lady Records

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mr. Lady Records was an American record label based in San Francisco and existed from 1996 to 2004. In addition to music, videos were also published on the label.

Company history

The label was founded in 1996 in Durham , North Carolina by Kaia Wilson and Tammy Rae Carland. Mr. Lady Records pursued the goal of creating a forum for political and queer music.

The flagship of the label was the band Le Tigre , who released their first two records on Mr. Lady Records. LeTigre succeeded in conveying feminist and queer content internationally with a mixture of electronic music and punk . Despite the greater commercial success with LeTigre, the label had to give up in 2004 due to financial problems.

Alignment

Influenced by the Riot Grrrl movement in the early 1990s, Mr. Lady Records specialized in female artists with feminist , lesbian and queer content. With bands like Le Tigre , Tracy + The Plastics , The Need and drag artists like Vaginal Davis , Mr. Lady Records had a major impact on the development of queer cores and queer subcultures .

The label relied on the feminist subcultures of the US west coast with their focus on Portland / Olympia and San Francisco. What the bands had in common was their political aspirations, but there were no stylistic guidelines. One focus, however, was on queer music with electro and punk influences, a style of music that is described using terms such as “Queercore”, “ Electropunk ” and “Homocore”. In these genres, Mr. Lady Records is often seen as style-defining.

To motivate the label, Kaia Wilson explained that Mr. Lady Records had been founded, “to be an outspokenly feminist / political record and video label that put out great music by like minded musicians, to try and help our artists take the musical route that represents their values, to be a fair business that caters to the ladies, freaks and fags.
