Palamuse (historical German name St. Bartholomäi ) was an Estonian rural community in Jõgeva County with an area of 216 km².

Palamuse was first mentioned in a document in 1234. The rural community had 2,496 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2010). In addition to the main town of Palamuse (627 inhabitants), it included the villages of Änkküla, Eerikvere, Ehavere, Imukvere, Järvepera, Kaarepere, Kaiavere, Kassivere, Kivimäe, Kudina, Luua , Mullavere, Nava, Pikkjärve, Praaklima, Raadivere, Raadivere, Süvalepa, Toovere, Vaidavere, Vanavälja, Varbevere and Visusti .

From 1895–1899, the Estonian writer Oskar Luts went to school in Palamuse, who later became one of the most widely circulated authors in Estonia with his fictional school memories. A museum on his life and work as well as on the Estonian school system at the end of the 19th century has been housed in the former school building since 1987. Also worth seeing is the church dedicated to the Apostle Bartholomew , one of the oldest stone churches in Estonia, from the 13th century. It was rebuilt in the 15th century in the Gothic style. The apostle gave the Palamuse parish its name.
