Gregorian is a band that sings works of pop and rock music in the style of the Gregorian chant of medieval monks. Although the idea for the band was born in Germany , most of the male singers in the current line-up are from Great Britain .

Career

The Hamburg music producer Frank Peterson came up with the idea of mixing conventional Gregorian music with modern light music in the early 1990s and founded the Enigma project with Michael Cretu . After the success of the first Enigma album, he produced his own album called Sadisfaction under the name Gregorian .

At the end of the 1990s, he took up this idea again and commissioned his production team Michael Soltau, Jan-Eric Kohrs and Carsten Heusmann to have classically trained English singers sing the latest pieces of pop music . The singing style corresponds to that of the Gregorian chant , from which the group name is derived. The group consisting of twelve singers introduced a new classical / pop crossover music style, which is known as Gregorian pop or wellness sound . The area of ambient or chill-out is also related .

In 1999 the album Masters of Chant was released for the first time by the record company edel music and became an international success. The following albums followed year after year. The style of the group remained the same until the album Masters of Chant IV , only with the album The Dark Side , which was released in November 2004, the style of the group developed more towards rock music. In 2006 the works Chapter V and The Christmas Chants appeared. The latter consisted exclusively of folk Christmas carols, but also sung and written by well-known rock and pop stars. On March 30, 2007 the DVD Live in Castle Kreuzenstein was released . In 2007 the project Chants & Mysteries and Masters of Chant Chapter VI appeared . The follow-up work, Chapter VII , was published on September 25, 2009. In December 2009 the band celebrated their tenth anniversary with a world tour 2009/2010, which was continued in autumn 2010.

Although rarely represented in the top ten, Gregorian is still known to an audience of millions. The albums are consistently sold over long periods of time and can stay in the top 100 for up to six months. The album The Dark Side of the Chant was released on November 5, 2010 and the album Masters of Chant Chapter VIII on September 29, 2011 . On September 14, 2012, the album Epic Chants was released , on which the band interpreted songs from well-known films for the first time. Russian singer Eva Mali takes part in the CD recording.

On November 6, 2015, Masters of Chant: The Final Chapter was released, the last album for the time being, as the group wants to withdraw for an indefinite period. In this context, Gregorian will be on a farewell tour in several European countries with the Masters of Chant: The Final Chapter Tour 2016 in early to mid-2016 .

During the Final Chapter Tour, the entire concert was filmed in Berlin and was released on September 23, 2016 as a limited Blu-ray, DVD and CD.

Due to the overwhelming success, the tour continued in 2017.

On February 25, 2016, the band took part in the German preliminary round of the Eurovision Song Contest 2016 with the song Masters Of Chant .

The album Holy Chants was released on December 24, 2017.

Song selection

In an interview, Peterson stated that he selected the pieces in such a way that they also work in a limited pitch range. Starting with the second Masters of Chant album, original compositions such as Moment of Peace or Make Us One (only on the Limited Edition of Chapter II ) can be heard. Further original compositions of the following albums were:
