Roland Peil

Roland Peil (* 1967 in Essen ) is a German drummer and percussionist . He became known through his collaboration with Fantastischen Vier , Sasha , Peter Maffay , Till Brönner and Florian Dauner, as well as through his world tour with Sarah Brightman . He is considered one of the "best German percussionists".

Career

Roland Peil grew up in Düren and started playing drums at the age of ten . From 1978 to 1986 he took lessons in classical percussion and drums with Josef Offelder , Richard Herten and Detlev Landmann at the municipal music school in Düren. From 1979 to 1985 he won several prizes at the national youth music competition . From 1984 he was engaged in Latin American and Brazilian percussion, for which he later also took private lessons with Freddie Santiago , Martin Verdonk , Gumbi Ortiz and José Luis "Changuito" Quintana as well as took part in workshops with Birger Sulsbrück and Alex Acuña . In 1986 he graduated from the Stiftisches Gymnasium in Düren .

Peil was a member of the Landesjugendsinfonieorchester Nordrhein-Westfalen and the Bundesjugendorchester (BJO), with which he toured Germany, Spain and Israel , as well as the JugendJazzOrchester NRW , with which he toured the USA in 1986 .

In 1988 Peil qualified for membership in the Federal Jazz Orchestra (BuJazzO), to which he was the first drummer until 1991. He also played drums and percussion in various big bands , for example in the Yamaha Big Band Hamburg, in the Paul Kuhn Orchester , in Peter Herbolzheimer's Rhythm Combination & Brass , in the WDR Big Band Cologne , in the big band of the Cologne University of Music , in Günter Noris ' Gala Big Band , in the NDR Bigband and HR Bigband , the Hard Days Night Bigband and in the German Jazz Orchestra.

From 1988 to 1992 Peil studied at the State University of Music in Cologne , including jazz drums and drums with Michael Küttner . In 1993 he presented his solo project, Heroes in Toyland, on the occasion of the opening of the ice hockey world championship in 1993 in Dortmund's Westfalenhalle . Since 1995 he has made several study trips to Cuba . In 1996/1997 he directed the cultural exchange project Agua de Colonia, which he founded, with German and Cuban musicians in Havana .

Act

In 1999 he started working with the Stuttgart hip-hop band Die Fantastischen Vier (Fanta4), among other things, he worked on their MTV Unplugged album in 2000 . In 2003 Peil was a guest lecturer at the State University of Music in Stuttgart . In 2004 he accompanied the English soprano Sarah Brightman on a world tour.

Peils cooperation with the German Jazz - trumpeter Till Bronner and his band started in 2005. In 2006 and 2007 he was involved in the CD production and the tour Encounters - An Alliance for Children involved with Peter Maffay and 14 artists from around the world. Together with the Fanta4 drummer Florian “Flo” Dauner, he also appeared as a duo, for example at the Meinl Drum Festival 2007 . The eight-piece band Calvimetro , which he founded together with the Cuban singer Eduardo Duquesne, developed a mixture of traditional Cuban son and influences from dance-house-fun-jazz, and so far has had several appearances, especially in western and northern Germany.

Peil worked with numerous local bands in the Cologne area, as well as with nationally and internationally known artists, such as Peter Alexander , Klaus Doldinger , Charlie Mariano , Chaka Khan , Randy Brecker , Wolf Maahn , Peter Fessler , Joe Sample , Orange Blue , Grooveminister , Pointer Sisters , Andres Ballinas, Reiner Witzel or Ike Stubblefield.

Roland Peil has lived in Cologne since 1988 and is married. He is the brother of the guitarist and singer Florian Peil ( Peilomat , Kasalla ).
