Youth Jazz Orchestra NRW

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Jugendjazzorchester NRW (JJO NRW, also called JugendJazzOrchester NRW ) is a big band for the promotion of young talent in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia . The formation has a classic big band line-up: five trumpets , four trombones , five saxophones / woodwinds and a rhythm section ( piano , guitar , bass , drums ).

history

The JJO NRW was founded in 1975. North Rhine-Westphalia was the first federal state to set up and sponsor a youth jazz orchestra with the support of the then Prime Minister Johannes Rau . The orchestra is now supported by the State Music Council of North Rhine-Westphalia .

The big band was initially led by Glen Buschmann and Meinhard Puhl . The artistic management team also included Wolfgang Breuer and Wolf Escher , who looked after the band until 2007. Then the management team consisted of Frank Reinshagen , Marko Lackner and Dietmar Mensinger , supported by Michael Villmow . Gabriel Pérez , Stefan Pfeifer-Galilea , Stephan Schulze and Thomas Haberkamp currently lead the band as part of the team. The organization and management has been in the hands of Haberkamp since 1996.

The members of the artistic management team shaped the rehearsals and concerts from the start. With their own arrangements and compositions especially for the JJO NRW, they promoted the artistic growth of the young musicians because they gave them the chance to develop their individual strengths in “tailor-made” musical sentences. The orchestra met twice a year for work phases. Since its foundation, the JJO NRW has also been a representative of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia; So far 42 concert tours have taken it since 1978 through all five continents. In 2013 the formation received the WDR Jazz Prize .

repertoire

In addition to classics, contemporary trends also determine the picture. "Outstanding soloists balance each other out with collective sounds, a completely independent sound that stands out from that of other big bands." The big band has worked with classical ensembles on several occasions, for example on the interpretation of Rolf Liebermann's Concerto for Jazzband and Sinfony Orchestra.

effect

By 2007, 500 young musicians had already gained significant professional experience in the work phases and on the concert tours of the JJO NRW. A third of them became professional jazz musicians and "form the core of the rich jazz scene in North Rhine-Westphalia." Some became lecturers at music schools and universities or belong to professional big bands such as the WDR Big Band Cologne or the NDR Big Band .

Following the model of the JJO NRW, other federal states soon also founded youth jazz orchestras. With the founding of Bujazzo in 1988 and the youth jazz bands of the new federal states after 1990, a support system was established analogous to the promotion of young musicians in classical music.
