Thomas Haberkamp
Thomas Haberkamp (* 1954 ) is a German jazz musician ( alto and soprano saxophone , composition, orchestral direction) and manager of the NRW youth jazz orchestra .
Live and act
Haberkamp studied musicology and journalism at the University of Münster . Musically he was initially influenced by Glen Buschmann and in 1980 he played in his Dortmund jazz ensemble Fun . Then he was a member of the NRW Youth Jazz Orchestra. He received classical and jazz training at the music academies in Münster, Cologne and Dortmund. Since 1981 he has taught in Dortmund, at the Folkwang School in Essen and between 2002 and 2004 as a visiting professor at the Belarusian Academy of Music in Minsk.
Haberkamp is the founder of the saxophone quartet MultiColore , which is rated as “one of the most versatile chamber music ensembles in Germany” (RuhrNachrichten). He also performs in a duo with guitarist Frank Gerstmeier. He can also be heard on albums with Jochen Schrumpfs Ceddo and the street boys . Since 1996 he has been the managing director of the NRW Youth Jazz Orchestra. Since 2006 he has also headed the regional youth music competition and the state youth jazz competition in North Rhine-Westphalia .
The pianist Clara Haberkamp is his daughter.
