Leon Pininski

Leon Graf Piniński (born March 8, 1857 in Lemberg , Galicia , Austrian Empire ; † April 4, 1938 ibid) was a Polish university professor, rector of the University of Lemberg and politician . From 1889 to 1898 he was a member of the Austrian House of Representatives and from 1903 a member of the Herrenhaus .

education and profession

Piniński completed a private education and passed the Matura in Tarnopol in 1874 . He studied law at the University of Lemberg between 1874 and 1878 and continued his studies between 1878 and 1880 at the universities of Leipzig , Berlin and Vienna . In 1880 he received his doctorate in Lviv for Dr. iur.

Professionally, Piniński was active from 1886 as the landlord of the Grzymałów estate in the Galician district of Skalat , in 1886 he became a private lecturer at the Institute for Roman Law at the University of Lviv. He was promoted to Professor of Roman Law at Lviv University in 1891. Between 1907 and 1918 he was a member of the Imperial Court . After the end of the First World War in 1919, Piniński was again full professor at the University of Lviv and subsequently concentrated on his scientific career. He was made an honorary professor of Roman law in 1935 and was rector at the University of Lviv from 1928 to 1929. He was considered to be an excellent expert on Roman, civil, criminal and constitutional law.

Politics and functions

Piniński was a member of the Galician state parliament from 1888 to 1898 and was a member of the House of Representatives for three legislative periods from January 30, 1889 to April 1, 1898. He achieved his first mandate through a by-election in the Galician constituency of the large estate No. 20 (Tarnopol), where he succeeded the resigned deputy Teodor von Serwatowski . Piniński joined the Polish Club and in 1891 won the mandate in the electoral district of the Galician rural communities No. 27 that he was able to defend in 1897. Due to his appointment as governor, he resigned the mandate. On June 8, 1903, he was appointed a member of the manor for life and belonged to the “group of the right”.

Piniński was governor of Galicia from 1898 to 1903. He sympathized with the national democratic party Endecja and was a fighter against the Ukrainian national movement and against Polish socialism. Furthermore, he opposed social reforms and in 1907 opposed the reform of the Austrian parliament and the reform of the electoral law in Galicia. During the First World War he remained in Lviv, which was occupied by Russia.

Private

Piniński was born the son of the landlord Count Leonard Piniński. His brothers Mieczysław Piniński and Stanisław Piniński were also politically active. In 1903 he married Countess Maria Mniszech, widowed Freiin Horochowa. His wife died in 1922 and there were no children from the marriage. He was a well-known art collector and made a name for himself as a patron . In addition, he wrote treatises in the field of art and helped organize the construction of various museums. In 1908 he acted as administrator of the Museum for Art and Industry Vienna . He bequeathed his art collection partly to the royal castle on the Wawel and partly to the Ossolineum in Lemberg.
